Megaphysics and I played our regular monthly show - Logical Aggression at Ground Kontrol - last night. Megaphysics opened the night playing electro, house, and techno from 9:00 PM until approximately 11:30 PM. Then I took over with a mixture of breaks, downtempo, electro, and pieces of MTT 100.

  2. Fracture / Sound Spectrum '96 05:14
  3. Nebula / Frame Of Reference 08:16
  4. Enjoy ft. Paolo Corsini / Jellyfishes Leave Me Indifferent 13:10
  5. Parallel / Into The Deep End 17:41
  6. Infest / Peaceful Tree 22:56
  7. Moreno / Alone 26:40

  11. Equinox / Your Love's So Cold 43:30

  13. Nebula / Encounters VIP 51:24
  14. Spotless / She Showed, She Smiled 56:51

As mentioned, 10 of these tracks were released by the Irish drum & bass label Subtle Audio. Everything except tracks 6, 7, 10, and 14. I'd say just about everything on the label is good. Lots of interesting drum programming. It's run by DJ Code, and I've got to give credit to him for the transition from Your Love's So Cold to Bouncing Octagonal Fragments to Encounters, something he did on the Subtle Audio Vol. II mix. (Though I did mix up the track order a little bit).

Tracks 6 and 7, Peaceful Tree and Alone respectively, are both from the free netlabel Digibeat Music. Active from about 2006 to 2013, they released a series of drum & bass releases, including several by artists that also appeared on the Subtle Audio compilations. (Eschaton, Jason oS, Parallel, Relapse, [sub].) Digibeat's back catalog is available for download through their blog, and the label Omni Music seems to have picked up where they left off.

Finally: shoutout and thanks to Ryan Organ, who sold me the first Subtle Audio vinyl comp when he was working at Anthem Records. His recommendation was perfect; I've been following the label since.

MTT092 Spectrogram

Post-dubstep, drum & bass, footwork and a tiny bit of electro this week. Featuring eight tracks from the excellent Cosmic Bridge record label.

  1. Crypticz / Spirit On (For Z) 00:00
  2. Aether Pilot / Northern Radio Plant 02:47
  3. Ital Tek / Shinra 05:47
  4. Om Unit / Angry Buzz 07:59
  5. Ital Tek / Mega City Industry 11:35
  6. Kuedo / Onset (Escapism) 15:10
  7. Kuedo / Reality Drift 17:40
  8. Boxcutter / Tibetan Metastate 19:46
  9. Skip Club Orchestra / Sub-Scream 21:40
  10. Breaka ft. SC / Aromatic Riddim 24:16
  11. Danny Scrilla & Om Unit / Free Flight 28:26

  15. Moresounds / Ting N Tings 40:12

  18. PFM / Danny's Song 52:15
  19. Paul Blackford / Jacob's Ladder 55:17
  20. Skip Club Orchestra / But... 58:38

The obvious highlight here is all the tracks from Om Unit's label Cosmic Bridge - Spirit On, Angry Buzz, Tibetan Metastate, Free Flight, Fuzzd An Soup, Make Believe, Ryoan-Ji, and Ting N Tings. The mixture of 80 BPM dubstep, drum & bass, and footwork promoted by Cosmic Bridge is really exciting to me - a fresh take on a lot of sounds I love.

The two new drum & bass tunes at the end are also worth noting. Coco Bryce's 多幸感 (Euphoria?) is beautifully programmed. Reminds me of Photek's Ni-Ten-Ichi-Ryu. And Sully's Flock EP is breathtaking, the best new drum & bass I've heard in years. (Well, new-to-me, anyway. The release itself is three years old.)

This show was thrown together in a few hours while exhausted. Given that, it turned out better than I expected. The tracks are good; I hope I didn't spoil them with my inelegant mashing.

MTT078 Spectrogram (Edited)

This week: an hour of music from Paul Blackford's label Militant Science, with a few old Drum & Bass tunes thrown in for fun. This mix is Not Safe For Work (NSFW) due to a vocal sample in one track.

Right-click save-as here or on the image above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Ali3ns3xtoy / ES 0722A 00:00
  2. Paul Blackford / Beta Decay 02:35
  3. Paul Blackford / Germ Warfare 05:23
  4. Headnoaks / Power 2 Da Beatz 08:35
  5. Synth Alien / Spectral Attack 11:24
  6. Vadz / Bees On Speed 15:08
  7. Oort Cloud / Dark Party 18:10
  8. Sound Synthesis / Human 21:00
  9. Paul Blackford / Renegade Bassline 24:24
  10. Synth Alien / Radioactive Decay 26:50
  11. Fullspectrum / My Amusement (Paul Blackford Remix) 31:17
  12. Synapse / Jedi Nights 35:06
  13. Ed Rush & Optical / Wormhole 38:54
  14. Scrase / Ford 42:18
  15. Fullspectrum / Replicant 45:30
  16. Beagle / Crazy Person 48:18
  17. E-Z Rollers / Spin Out 52:54
  18. Paul Blackford / Absent Friends 56:06

Militant science is (was?) a label started by Paul Blackford in 2009 with the intention to, as their page at discogs.com says, "bridge the gap between Electro & Drum n Bass". In my opinion it succeeds at this, with amazing results. In 2011 they released their back catalog for free; it's currently all (or nearly all) available at archive.org. The label appears to be defunct now. Their domain name lapsed (here's an archived copy of their webpage), and their bandcamp page no longer sells music. Which is a shame, because I'd absolutely pay for lossless copies of these tracks.

I'm not the first or only DJ to have played a Militant Science set. Probably the most important MS set, and I think the first I heard, was Data Terrorists Vol. 1 mixed by DVNT, released on the label itself as MSIA039. There's a Data Terrorists Vol. 2, mixed by Datacrashrobot and released as MSIA041, that I somehow haven't heard. (I'll correct that oversight very soon).

There is a lot - a lot - of good music on Militant Science that didn't make it into this mix. For anyone interested, here are a couple of suggestions: MSIA020 by Radioactiveman & Luke Dumbstruck. MSIA027 by J Shaw, utterly fantastic fast detroit electro. Audiotechnik by Datentraeger (AKA Marcus Mumm AKA Das Muster). All of Screwtec's releases, but particularly MSIA037. And add to that list all of Blackford's releases, because every single one is good.

I'm pretty satisfied with this set overall. Selection is good, mixing is fine, audio level could be more even. I've wanted to record a mix of these tracks for a long time, and I'm happy to have done it for aNONradio.

MTT070 Spectrogram

Ambient, downtempo, ~85 BPM grab bag.

  1. 2814 / 恢复 00:00
  2. Occult Orientated Crime / Rodrigo Syntese System 05:04
  3. Crystal Maze / Castro Valley 10:01
  4. Global Communication / 9:25 13:30
  5. The Future Sound Of London / Yage 19:28
  6. Solo / Waiting To Fly 24:00
  7. Rashida Prime / {unknown} 30:53
  8. Anthony Rother / Magic Diner Part II 32:35
  9. Nic TVG & Eschaton / Girl With Guns On Her Neck 35:57
  10. dBridge ft. Instra:mental / Blush Response 38:24
  11. Eschaton / Aphelian 43:15
  12. Dagobert / La Boom 45:40
  13. Vector Lovers / Shinjuku Girl 50:21
  14. Jean-Paul Bondy ft. Rochelle Vincente / Monochrome 53:09

This show is made up of a bunch of odd pieces. Waiting To Fly on the netlabel Hellven, vaporwave ambient tunes by 2814 and Rashida Prime, the two Eschaton tracks on Subtle Audio vol. III, and so on. I feel like there are a lot of stories here.

I don't have much more to say than that... this is a stack of tunes I like at a common tempo, thrown together at the last second while dead tired. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. A good way to wind down the month.

MTT039 Spectrogram

Ambient and drum & bass on Thanksgiving night. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. DeepWoods / Cause and Effect
  2. Kontext / Thaw (Dissident Remix)
  3. Teebee & K / Cherokee
  4. Poschek / Jungle Comp Entry
  5. Drumloop808 / Discontent
  6. Art of Noise / Camilla: The Old, Old Story (J. Majik Remix)
  7. T.Power / Refraction
  8. w u s o 命 / Hollow Feelings
  9. Arcon 2 / Skyland
  10. Diswork / Mental Disease
  11. Intense / Dark Skies
  12. Art of Noise / Art of Love (Ils Remix)
  13. Artemis / Elysian Fields
  14. Lamb / Gorecki (Global Communication Remix)
  15. Boymerang / Lazarus

Poschek's Jungle Comp Entry is an odd one here. It's one of 22 entries in the Dogs on Acid 2010 Jungle Competition. An excellent compilation of retro jungle tunes written by the Dogs on Acid Grid users. Wozowski has an excellent mix of the best tunes in the compo, which is how I discovered it.

This mix could've used more practice. I'm not a very good Drum & Bass DJ.
