MTT124 Spectrogram

It's been a warm and humid week, so I pulled a stack of techno and wandered through it for an hour.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. John Beltran / Soft Summer 00:00
  2. Convextion / Astrum 02:30
  3. D5 / Floatation Tank 07:51
  4. Dark Matrix / Untitled [LSF007 C3] 13:11
  5. Jason Fine / Midwest B 17:05
  6. Mike Huckaby / Wavetable No. 9 20:01
  7. Aril Brikha / On And On 25:22
  8. Drox / Moonlight Dub (Dawn Mix) 28:54
  9. Tracey / Outcome 33:51
  10. Paris (Black Fu) / Black In The Green 38:51
  11. Digitek / Detroit After Dark 41:14
  12. Jeff Mills / Solid Sleep 44:25
  13. Model 500 / I Wanna Be There (Edit) 47:11
  14. Metroplex Social Club / Hubble (Original Mix) 50:00
  15. Kit Clayton / Belt Frictional Problem 55:33

My first highlight is Too Many Clowns (Not Enough Jokers), which is featured in this mix as tracks 10 and 15. It's the first 12" on Throw, a sublabel of Twilight 76. Every track on this thing excellent, including DJ Godfather's locked grooves. But the dark Black In The Green and the slippery Belt Frictional Problem stand above the rest.

Tracey's Outcome EP is another release I'll recommend this week. It's a great electro four-tracker with some varied and interesting production. I had to slow down the track included in this mix by a lot, so check the link above to hear its original form.

Drox's Pitch The System EP, represented here by Moonlight Dub (Dawn Mix), is my third recommendation. It's a sweet compilation of proper electro and techno tracks, and is currently available for free at Drox's bandcamp. He also has music out on a label called Analog Cabin, and appears on the Southern Outpost / Datadisk System Updates EP, which I've played before on this show.

There's always more to talk about - Mike Huckaby's excellent Life With The Wave, the Metroplex Social Club 12" on Puzzlebox, D5 and old Delsin. But I've got to stop somewhere. Good tracks, loose mixing this week.

MTT113 Spectrogram

70 BPM dubby business this week. Working through my notes from last week, playing the more mellow tracks.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Kuedo / Shutter Light Girl 00:13
  2. Om Unit / Passages 01:15
  3. Juswan / Submersive (Scuba Version) 04:28
  4. Insync vs Mysteron² / Naked I 08:33
  5. Bandulu / Isn't It Time 13:14
  6. Reedale Rise / Duv 18:47
  7. Tones On Tail / Lions 22:22
  8. Jus Wan / Stand Dub 25:51
  9. Hajimari / Etched Dub 31:17
  10. Bryan Zentz / Troublesome Dub 35:22
  11. Subeena ft. Jamie Woon & Om'Mas Keith / Solidify 39:04
  12. Plant43 / Neon 43:48
  13. Vaccine / Cascade Failure 49:03
  14. Gescom / Go Sheep 52:41

Every one of these tracks is good. From the dubby techno of Insync vs. Mysteron and Bandulu, to the dubstep (?) of Jus Wan and Hajimari, to the electro and IDM at the end of this mix. I'm super happy with this selection, and how weird (and goofy, and fun) it is.

I want to highlight Vaccine's Ochre, Cascade Failure here. That's a seriously wonderful single that I found through the great Autonomic Movement. It's still fresh today, nine years later. I've been meaning to pick up more of Vaccine's work; now feels like a good time.

Plus I managed to play Lions, and it didn't sound terrible. Happy about that.

Levels could be better though.

MTT 111 / Resurface

MTT111 Spectrogram

Going for something a bit more fun this week. Brightening up to match the season. Selection is the usual electro, IDM, and techno, all at about 120 BPM.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Behind Clouds / Solitude Of Silence 00:00
  2. Miotek / Data 010 02:23
  3. Industrial Bass Machine / Artificial Intelligence 1991 06:22
  4. Sbles3plex / Mathematic Universe 09:20
  5. Paul Blackford / Hydro Glide (Ali3ns3xtoy Remix) 13:48
  6. Drexciya / Song Of The Green Whale 18:29
  7. Reedale Rise / Keep Sleeping 22:31
  8. A Guy Called Gerald / People Moover 25:16
  9. Zwart Licht Kommando / Tube 28 27:05
  10. Mikron / Black Sands 30:28
  11. Transparent Sound & Scape One & Karoshi / Solid Grooves 35:56
  12. Two Sandwiches Short Of A Lunchbox / Too Good To Be Strange 39:28
  13. Tura / Reishi 41:42
  14. Bobby BBQ / Hot Milk 46:59
  15. Yage / Coda Coma 51:18
  16. Mikron / Ask Me 54:52

Planning for this mix started with Drexciya's Song Of The Green Whale. It's a tune that reminds me of spring; it always makes me happy. The rest of the mix is a combination of songs to go with Green Whale and bits I've been listening to recently.

Bobby BBQ's Hot Milk LP is something I found only a few days ago, while going through the Future City Records catalog. It's a fun album, sounds to me more vaporwave than FCR's usual retrowave style. And it sits nicely with Plaid and FSOL, I think.

I'm not sure what I'll play next; maybe something fast again.

MTT109 Spectrogram

Grab bag show. Ambient, dub techno, IDM, bits and pieces I've been listening to this past month.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Oasis / Oasis Eight 00:00
  2. Melotone / Static Mind 03:54
  3. Silent Phase / Spirit Of Sankofa 09:05
  4. Speedy J / Treatments 15:31
  5. Speedy J / Fill 17 21:31
  6. Buntaro Toriyama / Against 23:41
  7. Dogon / Float On (In Spite Of Imminent Attack From The Space Pirats) 26:13
  8. Maurizio / T.T., F.F. 31:20
  9. Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor / I Spy (Spying Glass) 37:47
  10. Dntel / Fear Of Corners (L.A. Bus Mix) 41:04
  11. Midwest Product / Laundry 43:47
  12. Jega / Dreams 48:35
  13. Asylum Party / Old Dreams Are Not Innocent 52:44
  14. XY0815 / TRQ21 Pasadena (Varum Remix) 57:04

Laundry, Old Dreams Are Innocent, I Spy are all easy picks for favorite this week. But the Varum Remix of TRQ21 Pasadena surprised me at the end, and that's my last-second pick. It was a shame to talk over it. The whole album is good, and is still up for free (or pay-what-you-want) at the Yuyay Records bandcamp, so be sure to check that out.

Not too much to say about this one. Oh, one thing to note: I couldn't get Fill 17 to seamlessly transition into Treatments, unfortunately. That's why it hiccups there. Otherwise this mix is fine; a loose collection of ~100 BPM tracks. A nice way to close out March.

MTT 108 / Progressive Echoes

MTT108 Spectrogram

More dub techno this week. A slower, sleepier selection.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Am.Light / Breathing 00:00
  2. Ohrwert / Astral 06:20
  3. Brk / ML4 10:09
  4. Zzzzra / Avalanche 13:45
  5. Alteria Percepsyne / Unfamiliar Glare 17:15
  6. Organon / Unknown I 22:01
  7. Overcast Sound / Passing Storm 24:29
  8. Baier_Box / Atmung (Digitalverein Remix) 31:12
  9. Mark Broom / This Town 35:54
  10. R.M / Insatiable 40:06
  11. Brother Blue / Rain Selector 42:35
  12. Ohrwert / Ventral 47:20
  13. Nulleins / Multiplex 50:22
  14. Kris Moon / Submerged 58:22

This mix features two tracks from each of the labels Deepindub, Dewtone Recordings, Recycled Plastics, and Thinner. (Tracks 4 and 6, 1 and 7, 2 and 11 (also 12!), and 8 and 13 respectively). I imagine the first three as following the model established by the fourth: the famous ambient, dub techno, and minimal label Thinner. I'll probably do a Thinner show at some point, so I'll save my thoughts for that. Thinner's catalog is still freely available, so check that out if you're interested.

My favorite here is Passing Storm by Overcast Sound. Something about it landed just right. I gave it a few extra minutes before mixing out, and even then it felt wrong to interrupt it.

This will probably be my last straight dub techno show of the year. I needed to relax a bit this month, and this style worked well for that. Next week will probably be some downtempo to take the edge off after playing the arcade.

MTT107 Spectrogram

Straight dub techno this episode. New and old, combined haphazardly.

  1. Melotone / Dispersion Relation 01:15
  2. Ovatow / Phalaenopsis Dub I 06:12
  3. Mark Broom / Runners 10:44
  4. Zzzzra / Venlafaxine (75mg) 14:23
  5. Axs / Altitude Control 18:09
  6. Luke Hess / Motor Dub 20:58
  7. Dimomib / Dubplate 24:30
  8. Rhythm & Sound / See Mi Version 28:09
  9. Deadbeat / Organ In The Attic Sings The Blues 31:05
  10. Fenin / Warning 36:41
  11. Elting Lieb / Roll Side 39:30
  12. Literon / Permutation One 43:28
  13. Basic Channel / Q 1.1 I 45:58
  14. Kris Moon / GXAFT 52:27
  15. Sustainer / Monocromo_C 54:38
  16. Brother Blue / Shoreline Drive 56:17

There are a couple of old favorites in here - the Elting Lieb track, the third Monocromo track (I've now played all three of those on this program), See Mi Version. But my current favorite from this selection is Deadbeat's Organ In The Attic Sings The Blues. That whole album, Wild Life Documentaries, is fantastic.

I've been listening to dub techno all month. Something about dubby music in spring seems right to me. I'm sure I'll play more next week, so check back for that.

MTT106 Spectrogram

Dub techno, electro, future garage. Wandering through a few different styles in this show.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Andreas Tilliander / Folded Lines 00:00
  2. T++ / Aquatic 01:10
  3. Sustainer / Monocromo_B 05:42
  4. Brother Blue / Automatic Writing (Version) 09:09
  5. DRXT / Untitled [Dub Techno 180427 4] 12:18
  6. Convextion / Untitled [MATRIX1 A1] 15:42
  7. Monolake / Invisible 21:01
  8. Hadamard / Currents (Arctic) 24:12
  9. Ectomorph / Subversion (Dub) 28:50
  10. Morphology / Dark Flow 31:39
  11. Novamen / Dreaming Of 35:34
  12. Ghostek / Night & Low Light 38:51
  13. Hajimari / Diminished 42:13
  14. Pangaea / Router 44:37
  15. Scuba / Negative 49:06
  16. Hajimari / Finally Free 54:13
  17. Manu Shrine / Sediment 56:36

This is a mix in three segments. T++ (AKA Torsten Pröfrock)'s track Aquatic starts things off with a rainy mood; that's my favorite from the first 20 minutes. Hadamard's Currents (Arctic) is my pick from the second segment, from his relatively recent Flux EP. From the last six tracks, I'll highlight Scuba's Negative for its clear dub-techno sound.

I enjoy UK garage (2-step, and the styles it has influenced), but my knowledge and selection is limited. The Burial-like strain of future garage is particularly cool, represented here by Ghostek, Hajimari, and Manu Shrine. I'm glad to have run back about 20 minutes of it this week.

This one's pretty good. Good enough, anyway. Shoutout and thanks to DRXT for the sweet dub techno track; see you down at the arcade soon, friend.

MTT096 Spectrogram

Ambient, downtempo and breakbeat-y things on the program this week. Winding down after playing the arcade yesterday.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Albert Kuningas / Astraaliprojektio 00:00
  2. Ian O'Brien / Dayride 03:20
  3. Air / Travelling Without Moving (Trip 8) 09:01
  4. Fluke / Kitten Moon 12:28
  5. üNN / Passengers 19:15
  6. FSOL / Eyes Pop, Skin Explodes, Everybody Dead 22:43
  7. Neotropic / Nana 25:52
  8. International Observer / Flip Flop Cemetery 29:45
  9. Dublicator / Echos Of Babylon 34:13
  10. Cabaret Voltaire / Resonator 38:15
  11. Karl Biscuit / Hiérophone (Avalon Remix) 41:35
  12. Kenny Larkin / Java 46:16
  13. 69 / Desire 51:19
  14. Neotropic / The Older You Get 57:04

FSOL, Neotropic, two tracks from Freezone 1: The Phenomenology of Ambient, a couple tracks from the Elektrolux label. Good stuff.

Kitten Moon by Fluke stands out. I recently listened to that album again for the first time in years, and it holds up well. Though it is hard to hear the first two tracks without thinking of the movies (and commercials, etc.) they appeared in.

But the highlight here is Desire by Carl Craig, for sure. I've wanted to play that for months, and I can't think of a better way to close 2018.
