MTT No. 085 / Flying Over

MTT085 Spectrogram

This week: a mixture of Dutch electronic music (Bunker, Creme, Viewlexx) and bits of electro and synthpop. Less Dutch electronic than I expected to play, come to think of it.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Squadra Blanco / Berg Hotel 00:00
  2. Future Holograms / Valentine 01:32
  3. Jauzas The Shining / Crockett 03:20
  4. Solitary Dancer ft. Marie Davidson / Emails 2 Myself 06:01
  5. I-F ft. Nancy Fortune / Holographic Voice 10:11
  6. Legowelt / Hazy City Nights 13:08
  7. Rude 66 / As (12" Version) 17:10
  8. The Parallax Corporation / Slowflight, Runner 20:56
  9. Kassen / Walking, Breathing 21:45
  10. Shemale / City Of The Dead 23:54
  11. Tz0tzilla / Distrito Federal Infierno 26:34
  12. I-F / Il Tramonto 30:10
  13. Jauzas The Shining & G13ck / Ciudades Muertas 31:55
  14. Adaptive / Eschelon 35:22
  15. Rude 66 / Black Sabbath 38:42
  16. The Soft Moon / Desertion 45:10
  17. Sons Of Magdalene / The Whip 48:40
  18. Shemale / Succubus 51:28
  19. Squadra Blanco / A Gentle Murder 57:32

My current favorite here is Emails 2 Myself by Solitary Dancer. Released by Dark Entries last year, I just got around to picking it up this month. All four of Solitary Dancer's releases so far are fantastic. Each is unique, too, which I appreciate.

Also worth mentioning are the two Aztlán tracks: Distrito Federal Infierno by Tz0tzilla (AKA Aliensextoy), and Ciudades Muertas by Jauzas The Shining & G13ck. Both those tracks and their full releases are excellent.

This went better than expected! A bit uneven though. In retrospect a track or two should have played longer, and maybe one or two could have been swapped out. It was a fun time and the tracks are good; that's what matters.

  17. Ra-X / 1987 49:03
  18. Franck Sarrio / Untitled [Bunker 3051 B1] 52:23
  19. Ectomorph / (We Have Come To) Destroy Your Powercenters 54:14
  20. Ekman / Ergosphere 55:55

I was mistaken in the intro: both the Shemale tracks included in this mix are from Hell Transformation Screens, their release on Last Known Trajectory. I absolutely love their music, and every October I dig it up to play. Also every October I'm confronted by (and disappointed with) their choice of name. They've just released a new album on Tabernacle Records after a five year hiatus; vinyl only, unfortunately.

Three tracks from the label Interdimensional Transmissions feature in this mix. I'm a big fan of IT, and of Ectomorph in particular. (and I've got both the shirt and the stack of records to prove it). Ectomorph are releasing a new album, Stalker, on the 31st; the samples sound gorgeous.

I'm happy with this one. Some real all-time favorite tracks made it in (The Haunting...) and on the whole the set came together well enough. Levels are a bit uneven (thinking of Destroy Your Powercenters), but I hope not annoyingly so.

  36. Unknown Artist / Bayes
  37. Model 500 / Starlight
  38. Maurizio / Domina (Maurizio Mix) ~11:30 PM

Megaphysics then played an excellent set of old IDM and new (experimental?) techno; a lot of music from the label Whities.

A fine night, good music for the weather & time of year.

  15. Silicon Scally / Rendered 49:28
  16. G.D. Luxxe & Solvent / Quiet Life 51:09
  17. ADJ / Hope 56:31

This is music I've had for a long time - old Silicon Scally, Elektrolux, Satamile, Touchin' Bass, etc. I think the most recent acquisition here is Licking My Wounds by Adrià Duch, the one broken-beat track on a pretty sweet dub techno release.

Quiet Life by G.D. Luxxe & Solvent stands out in this selection. First released on Snow Robots Vol. 2 on Suction Records, the copy I played here is from the Star Gazing compilation on Guidance Recordings. Shoutout and thank you to Tobias B. for the copy of Star Gazing.

I don't have too much to say about this set. Good tracks, loose mixing, uneven levels. Was a fun way to spend my Thursday evening.

This is possibly the tenth year in a row that I've played bass music in August at Ground Kontrol. It started as "Detroit versus Miami", when DJ Popcorn (representing Detroit) asked me to play play electro & bass music (to represent Miami). A few years after that DJ Megaphysics stepped in and we've run it as a Miami Bass night since. There's some uncertainty regarding exactly when this all started; regardless, it's been a long time.

This set has a few bits of MTT075 and MTT027 in it, but was otherwise improvised. Was a fine set, lots of Bass 305, lots of Aux 88 (kind of a return to Detroit vs. Miami). The Cosmic Bridge pieces at the end were just to play around, hear those songs on a big system.

Megaphysics played a great set of late '80s / early '90s bass, hip-hop, and electro at the beginning of the night, 9:00 PM to 11:30 PM. Come to think of it, it was a good night all around.

But now I need to sleep.

MTT078 Spectrogram (Edited)

This week: an hour of music from Paul Blackford's label Militant Science, with a few old Drum & Bass tunes thrown in for fun. This mix is Not Safe For Work (NSFW) due to a vocal sample in one track.

Right-click save-as here or on the image above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Ali3ns3xtoy / ES 0722A 00:00
  2. Paul Blackford / Beta Decay 02:35
  3. Paul Blackford / Germ Warfare 05:23
  4. Headnoaks / Power 2 Da Beatz 08:35
  5. Synth Alien / Spectral Attack 11:24
  6. Vadz / Bees On Speed 15:08
  7. Oort Cloud / Dark Party 18:10
  8. Sound Synthesis / Human 21:00
  9. Paul Blackford / Renegade Bassline 24:24
  10. Synth Alien / Radioactive Decay 26:50
  11. Fullspectrum / My Amusement (Paul Blackford Remix) 31:17
  12. Synapse / Jedi Nights 35:06
  13. Ed Rush & Optical / Wormhole 38:54
  14. Scrase / Ford 42:18
  15. Fullspectrum / Replicant 45:30
  16. Beagle / Crazy Person 48:18
  17. E-Z Rollers / Spin Out 52:54
  18. Paul Blackford / Absent Friends 56:06

Militant science is (was?) a label started by Paul Blackford in 2009 with the intention to, as their page at discogs.com says, "bridge the gap between Electro & Drum n Bass". In my opinion it succeeds at this, with amazing results. In 2011 they released their back catalog for free; it's currently all (or nearly all) available at archive.org. The label appears to be defunct now. Their domain name lapsed (here's an archived copy of their webpage), and their bandcamp page no longer sells music. Which is a shame, because I'd absolutely pay for lossless copies of these tracks.

I'm not the first or only DJ to have played a Militant Science set. Probably the most important MS set, and I think the first I heard, was Data Terrorists Vol. 1 mixed by DVNT, released on the label itself as MSIA039. There's a Data Terrorists Vol. 2, mixed by Datacrashrobot and released as MSIA041, that I somehow haven't heard. (I'll correct that oversight very soon).

There is a lot - a lot - of good music on Militant Science that didn't make it into this mix. For anyone interested, here are a couple of suggestions: MSIA020 by Radioactiveman & Luke Dumbstruck. MSIA027 by J Shaw, utterly fantastic fast detroit electro. Audiotechnik by Datentraeger (AKA Marcus Mumm AKA Das Muster). All of Screwtec's releases, but particularly MSIA037. And add to that list all of Blackford's releases, because every single one is good.

I'm pretty satisfied with this set overall. Selection is good, mixing is fine, audio level could be more even. I've wanted to record a mix of these tracks for a long time, and I'm happy to have done it for aNONradio.

MTT No. 077 / Attack Position

MTT077 Spectrogram

2000s UK breaks and electro bass. Fast, tough music.
Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Industrial Bass Machine / Prepare For Invasion 00:01
  2. Dexorcist ft. Krude / Edge City Express 01:15
  3. Kronos Device / Below The Surface 06:45
  4. Industrial Bass Machine / Invisible Force 10:05
  5. Blackmass Plastics / Impure 13:41
  6. Bomb Dogs / Through The Wires 17:31
  7. Kansas City Prophets / Ignition 20:54
  8. Noyeahno / Makin' Me Weird 23:16
  9. DJ Controlled Weirdness / Bass Sox Express 26:13
  10. Aaron Spectre / Music Is The Weapon 28:28
  11. Bomb Dogs / A Touch Of The Old 31:49
  12. DJ Controlled Weirdness V Dexorcist / The Monsters 36:37
  13. Radioactive Man vs The Dexorcist / Sector 6 40:02
  14. Kronos Device / Terminate The Bass 43:59
  15. Radioactive Man / Manwich 49:41
  16. Omni Trio / Mainline 51:52
  17. Tim Wright / Shadow Of The Beast III Opening (Paul Blackford Electro Remix) 56:27

I associate this selection, this sound in general, with Battle Trax and Control Tower. Also Audio Illusion and SMB Records, but none of that made it in (because I don't own any, and couldn't pick any up in time). Also represented are Digital Distortions, Dirty Needles, and Rag & Bone which are (as far as I can tell) labels friendly with the Control Tower / SMB set.

There's a lot of Dexorcist and a bit of Bass Junkie in this. I won't go through listing each track (I'm already being tedious); you can figure it out from their discogs pages.

Track 13, listed here as Sector 6 by Radioactive Man & Dexorcist, might not be named correctly. I bought it on beatport, and that's how the track is labeled there. However, if you look up Sector 6 on youtube, you'll find a different track, actually the opposite side of that record. Beatport is often wrong in this way, which is one of the reasons I never link to it. I've credited the track as Sector 6 here because it forms a nice link with last week's mix.

This mix ended up straying from strict UK electro bass. I got into some breaks, even threw in an old Omni Trio hardcore track for fun. It doesn't flow right and some of the mixing is loose, but I'm satisfied. Good enough.

MTT No. 076 / Bass Mentality

MTT076 Spectrogram

Aggressive 2000s Florida electro with a few '90s bass CD tracks thrown in.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Circuit Breaker / Circuit Breaker 01:15
  2. Dynamik Bass System / Electronic Freakazoidz 04:12
  3. Tricky D / Take It To The Max (Hydraulix Remix) 07:19
  4. Code Rising vs Phonotronix / Fathom 11:13
  5. T.E.S.T. / Heat Levels Critical 13:42
  6. Supreme.ja / Terminal City 18:14
  7. Autonomous Bass Heads / Paradise Garage 22:11
  8. Hydraulix / Sector 7 26:20
  9. T.E.S.T. / Coming Thru 31:15
  10. Phonotronix / The Camouflage 35:18
  11. Factor E / 20k Freaks (Jackal & Hyde Remix) 39:07
  12. Otto Von Schirach / Bass Low (Gucci Bass RMX) 41:56
  13. Dynamik Bass System / Face Down (B)ass Up (Booty Hop) 45:29
  14. Dynamix II / Pledge Your Allegiance To Electro Funk 46:39
  15. Exzakt / Dark Mind 51:01
  16. Silicon / Silc Worm 55:57

A close look will reveal that this isn't exclusively artists from Florida. Both Dynamik Bass System and Supreme.ja are German. My excuse is: the tracks by them featured in this mix were all released on Florida labels (Monotone and BFP). Not to take away from either artist, those tracks are excellent.

Otto Von Schirach's Bass Low was linked on reddit's /r/electro and was in the mix the next day. Definitely my favorite of Otto's tracks (that I've heard), with Calle Ocho as a close second. I'm still not sure where or when to play it, but smashing it into 20k Freaks worked well enough. It's worth noting that 20k Freaks is the A side of Florida Electro Artists Vol. 2; the B side of that record is Resident Alien's Movement Through Thought.

I feel that this mix is OK, but very close to being great. Swap out a track or two, add a track or two, mix a few slightly faster and it'd be much improved. Most of these are tracks I don't regularly play; I'm glad I gave them a shot here.
