  14. Visitor / Mechanical Soul
  15. Shadowbunny / ~
  16. Uniflux / Broken Wave Encoder

Black Montanas, Bunker, Viewlexx, and a few odds and ends.

There's an unfortunate zipper noise at the five minute mark thanks to a technical issue with my playback unit. (I suspect it's a JACK buffer underrun occuring on my SCS.4DJ due to bad throughput from a USB flash drive.)

Shadowbunny is the artist I'd like to highlight this week. I've been a fan since O, cmuzik016, in 2012. The music Shadowbunny has on bandcamp sort of rides a line between electro and... witch house? (Remember witch house?). Really cool stuff. I'm a fan.

  19. The Pulse Projects / Ice Cold Funk Series 024
  20. Dystronic / Eiswelt

There's a whole bunch of Bunker in this. Shemale, Composite Profuse, Alex Nôrinh, Franck Sarrio, Artists Anonymous #2, etc. There's a lot of great spooky/dark music on Bunker; I'll definitely be playing more this month.

The E.C. Breeders EP (E-SERIES 01) by Dietrich Schoenemann deserves special attention. Every track on it is phenomenal... the one not included in this mix, side A track 1, is a cool grindy thing. I'm lucky to have a found a copy of it in a used bin in Seattle.

I observe two theme months every year. "Holiday Months" I guess you could say. August for Miami Bass music, October for Halloween-y music. So expect three more dark and/or spooky shows this month.

MTT No. 029 / Breakdance & Motivate

anonradio, electro, movement through thought, music, radio // 2017-09-15

MTT029 Spectrogram

  1. Link & E621 / Antacid (Jedi Knights Remix)
  2. Eggfooyoung / Electric Motivators
  3. MMT-8 / Mindlocked
  4. Burrito Boys / Untitled [AT05 B2]
  5. Knightz of Bass / Space Invaders
  6. Knightz of Bass / Da M-Pire (Sideshow Remix)
  7. Man Parrish / Man Made
  8. DJ R21 / Style
  9. Intelligent Concept / Just Get On Down
  10. State Logik / Electro Boogie
  11. Cyber-Funk / Untitled [UR0117 B2]
  12. Egyptian Lover / Sintropolis
  13. Eggfooyoung / B-Boys Take Control
  14. Michna / Quadruple Gold Dipped
  15. Santogold / Anne (Switch Mix, Hydroz Re-Rub)
  16. Kraftwerk / Numbers
  17. Mandroid / Horizon

I've been holding on to some of these tracks all summer. Zaps and squeaks and all kinds of fun.

The back half of this mix - from Sintropolis through Numbers - features what I like to think of as the "numbers rhythm". Meaning the particular drum sequence (specifically the arrangement of kick and snare) as heard in Numbers by Kraftwerk. It's a common pattern present in a lot of Electro. See for example: Planet Rock, Electric Kingdom, Running, a lot of freestyle, etc. It's a pattern I absolutely love. Some people never tire of a straight TR-909 house beat. I never get tired of the numbers rhythm.

The version of Anne by Santogold I played in this show is a weird one. It's an edit ("Re-Rub") of a remix (Switch Mix) of the original. Switch is credited as producer of the original Anne; he later remixed it (by adding a hook based on Kraftwerk's The Model, as well as the drum sequence and some samples from Numbers) for a mix CD called Top Ranking - A Diplo Dub. Hydraulix took that track and doubled its length, then distributed it as the Hydroz Re-Rub. It was originally available for download on Myspace, or maybe Soundcloud, but it's gone now.

Eggfooyoung, AKA Adrian Michna, is a monster. I've now played every beat-driven track on the Breakdance & Motivate EP on this show. It's one of my favorite records. Four cracking electro tracks. Drum machine, bass, FX, and ambient sounds. It's so, so good.

And that's it. Time to sleep.

MTT No. 028 / Weathered

anonradio, electro, movement through thought, music, radio, techno // 2017-09-08

MTT028 Spectrogram

Mellow electro and techno this week. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. STΛQQ ƟVERFLƟ / Lonesome (Glade)
  2. Versalife / Artificial Affection
  3. Scape One / Europa's Secret
  4. Dez Williams / Weathered
  5. Sigma Algebra / Funaphy
  6. Scape One / Internal Symmetry
  7. Gliese / Cosmic Breeze
  8. Nimoy / Smoking
  9. Dan White / Digital Detox
  10. DJ R21 / A.L.S.
  11. Mikron / Black Sands
  12. Króm / Cowtipping
  13. Bitstream / Monolith
  14. F.O.T.N. / State Of Mind

The Brokntoys and Elektrodos releases here are recent purchases. I haven't quite figured out how to play them yet. Really great stuff, though. I've been listening to that Versalife release on repeat since I bought it.

The juxtaposition of Cosmic Breeze by Gliese and Smoking by Nimoy is a bit goofy but I love it. Mainly for that guitar sound.

And obviously Monolith by Bitstream is amazing. So emotional. If only I hadn't missed my cue. Ah, well. There's always next time.

MTT No. 027 / Slo Bass

anonradio, electro, miami bass, movement through thought, music, radio, techno // 2017-09-01

MTT027 Spectrogram

This week: selections from old bass CDs... and a bit of Model 500. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Bass 305 / Pure Tone - Bass! (Low Frequency Audio Version)
  2. Eurobass Express / The Art Of Slow Bass (BBC Boom Radio Mix)
  3. Circuit Breaker / 3 Wheel Motion
  4. Techmaster P.E.B. / Do You Like Technobass?
  5. Beat Dominator / Jurassic Bass
  6. MC A.D.E. and Posse / Bass Rock Express (Instrumental)
  7. Techno Bass Crew / Cosmic Lullaby
  8. Bass 305 / Look Aggressively Towards The Future (Interactive Bass Test)
  9. Beat Dominator / Music's Hypnotizing
  10. Circuit Breaker / Debonaire's Drop
  11. Silicon / Bass Experience

  14. Techno Bass Crew / Computer Language
  15. Dynamix II / Machine Planet
  16. Dynamix II / Dream Scape
  17. Beat Dominator / Deep Dream

My favorite here is definitely Bass Experience by Silicon. (Not Heath Brunner, a different Silicon...) After that I'd say Machine Planet by Dynamix II. It doesn't quite fit in this mix, but I wanted to hear it, so there you go.

This show marks the end of bass month. I'm happy I've had a chance to play this stuff, and extra-happy I now have recordings of these sets. Now it's time to put these records away. Until next August, when bass month begins again.

MTT No. 026 / Movement Through Thought

anonradio, electro, miami bass, movement through thought, music, radio // 2017-08-25

MTT026 Spectrogram

Mid 2000s Florida electro. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. DJ Overdose / The Beat
  2. Exzakt / More Bounce To The Ounce
  3. Silicon / Silicon
  4. Netzwerk Florida / Earth.Wind.Fire (Instrumental)
  5. Exzakt / Musik Is The Drug
  6. E.V.A.C. / Terra (Salim Rafiq's Anti Terra-rist Remix)
  7. Resident Alien / Movement Through Thought
  8. T.E.S.T. & Excel / No Disgrace In The Bass
  9. Brice Kelly / Phony Tech Support
  10. Sound Chasers / Sonar
  11. Brice Kelly / Unmanned March
  12. Xerodefx / Fatal Brain Reactions
  13. Brice Kelly / New Awareness
  14. Exzakt / Futureshock
  15. Xerodefx / Onya
  16. T.E.S.T. & Excel / It Seems To Me

These are some of my favorite records. This radio program itself, Movement Through Thought, is named after the Resident Alien track in this mix.

More Monotone USA again, and a small selection of Frajile Records (Bandcamp) and Exceleration Records. I have the complete run of Exceleration, and nearly the complete run of Monotone. The later Exceleration releases (in particular the two T.E.S.T. records) are unbelievably good. Unfortunately I'm missing pieces of the Frajile catalog, most importantly Florida Electro Artists Vol. 1 and the two Resident Alien 12"s. They're shooting up in value, too, so it's unlikely I'll be able to pick them up soon.

These tracks hit a real sweet spot for me. I don't think I can describe why, exactly. I'm not much of a writer. TR-808 or TR-808-like drums, synth leads & arpeggios, pitched bass samples, not overcompressed so as to be too loud. (With the exception of those Brice Kelly releases - there's more compression going on there than I like...). Some air left in the sound, so you can hear some subtlety in it.

Blurry photo of 2000s Florida electro records

I completely forgot about that Decibel Festival 2006 flyer in the sleeve of MON004. I keep flyers, tickets, and receipts inside the poly sleeves of records...

MTT No. 025 / Miami's Vice

anonradio, electro, miami bass, movement through thought, music, radio // 2017-08-18

MTT025 Spectrogram

Some aggressive post-2000 electro and bass music. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Dynamik Bass System / Robotmachine
  2. Dynamix II / Sedona
  3. Ghosts In The Machine / Merciless Killing Machines
  4. Lethal Agent & Kounterakt / Mind, Body and Soul
  5. Synthetix / Birth Of The Bot
  6. Hydraulix / Low Endz
  7. Hydraulix / Nympho
  8. Autonomous Bass Heads / Bass Rock
  9. DJ Overdose / It's DJ Overdose
  10. $uper Geniu$ / Miami's Vice
  11. TEST / Audio Stimulant
  12. Brice Kelly / Machine On Rails
  13. Larry McCormick / Escape
  14. Exzakt / Clarity
  15. Exzakt / Off Course

Unofficial bass month continues. "Steamrolls on through" is maybe a better description than "continue" for this week.

There's a lot of Monotone USA in this mix; five tracks, give or take. There's a run of records on Monotone, starting with the reissue of Pledge Your Allegiance To Electro Funk (MON003), that are just paint-peelingly loud and aggressive. I pull them off the shelf and let them flex about once a year. This is the result.

I've linked to the discogs page for Robotmachine above, but Dynamik Bass System have kindly made it available on Bandcamp. I may pick that up at some point, to have a cleaner copy of the release.

Free release from Reedale Rise. Mellow. Just about every track stands out on this. I'm especially fond of Duv for the 70 BPM dub sound.
