MTT No. 067 / Drive (To Nowhere)

MTT067 Spectrogram

A mix of breaks, IDM, and electro this week. It sounds like... nonsense. Heh.
Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Luke Vibert / Reality Check 00:00
  2. Sint / Off To Work 03:49
  3. Fellmann & Louise / Chicken Sandwich 06:07
  4. Wenzel / Latenight Drive 09:03
  5. Paul Hardcastle / King Tut 13:31
  6. Facade / The Groove (Drive To Hollywood Version) 17:35
  7. Hashim / Chateau Vie (Castle Life) 22:04
  8. Intelligent Concept / Keep Da' Groove 25:09
  9. Nagz / Daughter of Time 29:32
  10. Tusken Raiders / Sexy Sandpeople 31:35
  11. Dagobert / Ready To Rock (Electronic Religion) 34:32
  12. Imatran Voima / Commando (Sbassship Remix) 36:52
  13. Brothomstates / Rktic 40:48
  14. Two Lines / Lexo 1000 45:21
  15. Outputmessage / Bernard's Song 51:12
  16. Hajimari ft. Jai Tee / Untitled 56:16

I'm feeling particularly braindead today, so I'll keep my comments short.

Nagz' Daugher of Time is supremely awesome and way, way too short. I've played Nagz once before on MTT. There's a directory full of his Fasttracker 2 mods on my hard drive that I need to go through. Might be a good idea to do a few extended edits, too.

Brothomstates' Rktic is the only record I have on the Warp sublabel Arcola. I'm a huge fan of Brothomstates, as I've mentioned before. It's a killer 12". The b-side - Matala Bobo - is just as good as Rktic.

The Lexo 1000 to Bernard's Song transition is one I particularly like, and have done a few times at Ground Kontrol. Both tracks are from very good (and very different) compilations.

I don't know what the selection will look like next week. I'll spend my time thinking sunny thoughts, and we'll see what happens.

MTT No. 066 / Less Filling

MTT066 Spectrogram

Some recent IDM-y acquisitions, some old tunes. The customary chill end-of-the-month show.

  1. Being / Sular Two 00:00
  2. Link / Arcadian (Global Communication Remix) 05:35
  3. Higher Intelligence Agency / ting 12:45
  4. Metamatics / Heddon Zara Spook 18:15
  5. XY0815 / Fuck Mars, We're On Earth Now 23:56
  6. XY0815 / TRQ21 Pasadena 25:40
  7. Micronaut / CMU 27:47
  8. Micronaut / Nevermore 31:52
  9. Higher Intelligence Agency / Hubble 35:00
  10. Micronaut / Ac33d 41:04
  11. Underworld / M.E. 45:23
  12. Brian Eno / The Roil, The Choke 52:13
  13. Dead TV Society & Zwart Licht Kommando / Gamma Waves 56:47

This came together after spending time with XY0815's This Tool Has No Options and Micronaut's electronics series (Resistor, Capacitor, Transformer). XY0815's album is currently free at Yuyay Records, and Micronaut's three electronics EPs are inexpensive (a couple of bucks each). All of them are really good and definitely worth picking up.

This mix doesn't quite work - Arcadian is played too loud, M.E. doesn't sit right, etc. But that's OK. The tracks are good. Should've closed with Headspin, though.

Logical Aggression @ Ground Kontrol / May 2018

Posted 2018-05-31. Permalink. Tagged ambient, electro, ground kontrol, idm, logical aggression, music, techno.

For the first time in years, I took notes while playing tracks at Ground Kontrol this month. (I always take notes ahead of time for reference, but I never mark the track order while DJing).

Megaphysics played an excellent disco / misc electronic set from about 9:00 PM to 11:30 PM, and then I played this:

  1. Fellmann & Louise / Chicken Sandwich ~11:30 PM
  2. Indulin / Lovin' It
  3. Indulin / Synthin' Clock Funk
  4. SCSI-9 / Silkworm
  5. Mrs Jynx / Supermarket Sandwiches
  6. Gottfried Y. Leibniz / Reliable Sun Ritual (0001)
  7. Indulin / Acid Footsteps
  8. Super secret track
  9. Norken / Static
  10. Matt Flores / Pursuit of Happiness
  11. Carl Finlow / Wafer Thin
  12. Metamatics / Hymn Bream
  13. AFX / Analogue Bubblebath
  14. Ed Chamberlain / Place
  15. Scape One / Plastic Lunch
  16. Elecktroids / Silicon Valley
  17. Nagz / Daughter of Time
  18. The Green Man / Deep Below
  19. Metamatics / Mops
  20. Jega / Starglider
  21. Paul Hardcastle / Loitering With Intent
  22. Quadrant 77 & Roller8 / Roll Into Space
  23. Jega / Knight Lore
  24. User48736353001 / Bimbongo
  25. Solenoid / July's War Butterflies
  26. Carl Finlow / Night Owl
  27. Plaid / Spudink
  28. Metamatics / Man-q-Neons
  29. Scape One / Internal Symmetry
  30. Mrs Jynx / Long Lost
  31. Jega / Oak Hanger
  32. Link / Arcadian (Global Communication Remix) ~1:30 AM
  33. Gottfried Y. Leibniz / Twofoldness
  34. XY0815 / Fuck Mars, We're On Earth Now
  35. Higher Intelligence Agency / ting
  36. Plaid / Headspin

Finished at 2 AM. A relatively lazy set, full of recycled mixes from my recent radio shows. I love ending sets with Headspin...

I'll try to do this when I play out. Hopefully somebody finds it useful.

MTT No. 065 / Faint Odour

Posted 2018-05-25. Permalink. Tagged ambient, anonradio, electro, idm, movement through thought, music, radio, techno.

MTT065 Spectrogram

More IDM this week. It's been a very IDM-y month.
Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Clatterbox / Jet Set [Looped Intro] 00:00
  2. Plaid / Undoneson 00:53
  3. Clatterbox / Jet Set 04:17
  4. Plaid / Spudink 07:29
  5. Lego Feet / Leaves On The Line 11:17
  6. Jega / Starglider 14:30
  7. Paul Hardcastle / Loitering With Intent 15:33
  8. Quadrant 77 & Roller8 / Roll Into Space 19:14
  9. Jega / Knight Lore 23:01
  10. AFX / Analogue Bubblebath 25:53
  11. Ed Chamberlain / Place 29:35
  12. Elecktroids / Silicon Valley 33:57
  13. Benjamin May / Norshor Nights 36:46
  14. The Green Man / Deep Below 40:00
  15. Metamatics / Mops 42:20
  16. Indulin / Strangeness 46:33
  17. Ed Chamberlain / Landmine 48:58
  18. International Debris / Sonmi 451 (Electric Sea) 54:22
  19. International Debris / Level Seven Environment Four 57:48

Somewhere between half and a third of this mix is proper old IDM. Old Warp, Skam, Hydrogen Dukebox, etc. Both Lego Feet and Jega's 1995 are relatively recent releases (or re-release in the case of the former). They're absolutely fantastic and worth picking up.

The two Ed Chamberlain tracks are from his Untitled release on Semantica Records. I've had those three tracks on repeat for weeks now. They're very good.

Sonmi 451 by International Debris was a last-minute addition (hence the flubbed mix). I think the track title is a reference to Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell... I should read that. In any case, it's a really cool ambient piece from the album Myosphere, and works well as a final track.

And that's week 65 done. Check back next time for what'll probably be the chillout set of the month.

MTT No. 064 / Tactile Illusion

MTT064 Spectrogram

A nonsensical mash of electro and IDM, old and new.
Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. 漂流する夢想家 / LOAD_SEQUENCE_0000 00:00
  2. Elecktroids / Future Tone 01:05
  3. DJ R21 / Machine City 04:30
  4. Nullptr / Vitreous 08:29
  5. Jega / Saint Bees 11:02
  6. XY0815 / 94V-O 12:50
  7. Userwave / The Accessport 15:14
  8. RAC / Continua 17:44
  9. Objekt / Cactus 22:35
  10. A. Ashdown / The Heck 27:06
  11. Monolake / Digitalis 31:02
  12. Indulin / Synthin' Clock Funk 33:05
  13. Indulin / Lovin' It 35:37
  14. Lanark Artefax / Touch Absence (Intimidating Stillness Mix) 37:57
  15. SMX / Sleep 42:00
  16. Gescom / Puzl 46:37

Three tracks (3, 12 and 13) are from the label Swishcotheque (discogs). Their catalog is worth digging through for good IDM / braindance; I recommend the releases by Delayscape, Indulin, Pad Foundation, and R21.

RAC's Structures EP deserves a special mention. It's a very good (and overlooked) mid-'90s Warp release; just about every track on it is gold. Continua in particular is great and always gets my feet moving.

Lanark Artefax's Touch Absence (Intimidating Stillness Mix) is the direct inspiration for this mix. The reason I lined up and played these tracks. It's stonkingly good. Hopefully the original mix on Whities 11 will be made available digitally, someday. Shoutout to Megaphysics for introducing me to it.

And yes, that's a fourteen minute song at the end of this mix. There's no way to top or interrupt Puzl by Gescom. (Though I do certainly try to mash Hip Hop, Be Bop (Don't Stop) into the breakdown, with questionable results.) So it's a cheat, but hopefully a forgivable one.

MTT No. 061 / Crystal City

  1. Chotto Suki / On The Way Back 00:00
  2. Mike Kidd / Haunted Raves 03:30
  3. Access To Arasaka / 40bwi3 40 08:27
  4. edIT / Dex 11:40
  5. Chris Randall / drt_895r 15:43
  6. Brian Oblivion / Subterranean Crystal City 20:55
  7. Micronaut / Remoter 24:30
  8. Dimomib / Automagic 27:19

  13. Frequent C / Lost 42:07
  14. Dagobert / Chill Out 45:21
  15. Bola / Horizophon 46:25
  16. Anthony Rother / Magic Diner Part 8 51:58
  17. Boards Of Canada / Open The Light 55:47

Subterranean Crystal City is a cool piece on the local Seattle label Innerflight Music. I think I ended up with a copy of it as a promo; I'm not sure. At some point I'll have to dig through that label's catalog.

Two tracks by Chris Randall made it in: drt_895r, and Remoter. The latter under his Micronaut alias. I've only recently started picking up his releases, and so far they've all been very good.

Open The Light by BoC was a last-minute choice. It turns out Music Has The Right To Children is 20 years old as-of last week. Originally released April 20th 1998. Ah... I see what they did there.

Not sure what I'll play next week. I might have to start repeating tracks soon.

  3. Miotek / Future For Machines 06:40
  4. Subway / Drop 10:25
  5. Suburban Knight / Collaboration Alpha 14:40
  6. Fleck E.S.C. / Dead End 17:42
  7. ITPDWIP / Eto Ya (It's Me) 21:00
  8. Drøn / Paradroid 24:34
  9. Igors Vorobjovs / Three Laws Of Robotics (In Circuit Mix) 28:10
  10. Datawave / Stratoforms 32:04
  11. Sbles3plex / Alternative 2 36:12
  12. Sbles3plex / Pmm Pss Tah 38:15
  13. Krypton 81 / Dobbeltgænger 41:30
  14. E.R.P. / Sensory Process 45:03
  15. Drexciya / Birth Of New Life 52:58
  16. Nei / Gates 58:50

I recently picked up the Sbles3plex album, Máquinas Deseantes; it's incredibly good. A nice range of tracks, very clean sounding. A well-mastered release in general - by which I mean it hasn't been compressed to hell. And it works as an album! The kind you listen to from beginning to end! I rarely enjoy listening to full-album-length Electro or Techno releases that way.

Both Drop by Subway and Collaboration Alpha by Suburban Knight are tracks that I've been playing for years. Usually in the same set. Drop was an odd used bin find, an electro-ish track from what I assume are House producers. Suburban Knight is, well, he's awesome. My Sol Dark Direction is indispensable.

The end of this mix is maybe a bit lazy, letting a couple of long tracks play from beginning to end (more or less), but they deserve to be heard in full. Sensory Process by E.R.P. is a monster. High drama. Megaphysics would call it "moody". Same with Birth Of New Life by Drexciya, slotted in here to bring things down a bit. The mix doesn't really work, but that's OK.

I did not realize it was Friday the 13th until half an hour before this was recorded. Some of the later selections (particularly Dobbeltgænger) may have been influenced by that discovery...

  13. Aaron Spectre / Down In The Gutter 48:34
  14. Autechre / Dael 52:46
  15. The Darkvoid Project / Taking Me Apart 58:45

I'm not sure what to highlight this week. The high weirdness of Moonlit Chatlogs or Eno's Squelchy Life. The breakbeat parts from Meat Beat Manifesto's Subliminal Sandwitch. The slightly more industrial Evanescence by Scorn. The IDM pieces, the one dub techno track that made it in.

This show is the first of Movement Through Thought's second year. I'm happy (and a little surprised) to have made it this far. To everyone who's been listening: thank you. I hope you've found some new music, or that you've heard some old music in a new way. Thanks also to aNONradio for hosting (and putting up with) me.

Here's to another year.
