MTT126 Spectrogram

The four-on-the-floor trend continues this week with some house and techno. Beware the sketchy vinyl recordings.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Echo 106 / Alternate Sun Rays 00:00
  2. Pheek / There You Are 01:45
  3. R.M / Jardin De Nuit 04:57
  4. Mikron / Amn't I 08:24
  5. Psyche / Elements 11:20
  6. Omar-S & Shadow Ray / Oasis #1 16:59
  7. Suburban Knight / The Groove (Pan Mix) 20:50
  8. Silk / Symplicity 24:22
  9. Orgue Electronique / Rootbound 26:38
  10. The Chicago Shags / International Banking 30:48
  11. $tinkworx / Mudpump 33:37
  12. The Golden Retrievers / Iron Beach 37:46
  13. Phase 4 Stereo / Tin Piano 42:09
  14. Legowelt / Beach Oceano 45:50
  15. Brothomstates / Matala Bobo 50:51
  16. Orgue Electronique / End Titles 56:24

This set was thrown together to play Legowelt's Beach Oceano. I've had it on repeat for weeks, since I found it on Unknown To The Unknown's bandcamp page. It reminds me of his Teac Life album; like Teac Life, Oceano is a free download and can picked up at the link above.

There's lots of great stuff in this hour beyond that - Carl Craig's gorgeous Elements, Suburban Knight's Groove, Matala Bobo (the B-side to Rktic, which I've played before). And (!) Tin Piano by my friend Phase 4 Stereo, released on the local netlabel Clusterflux.

I'm thinking electro again next week, followed by my usual celebration of bass in August. Thanks as always to aNONradio for hosting my show, and thanks to everybody out there listening.

MTT125 Spectrogram

A mix of what I've been listening to this week: the usual electro, IDM, and techno. No plan beyond that.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. R.M / Déambulation 00:00
  2. Scape One / Transcendent Thought 02:20
  3. Psychic TV / L.I.E.S. 05:47
  4. John Shima / Depopulation (Binalog Remix) 08:18
  5. Nullptr / Skyline 12:20
  6. The Black Dog / Skin Clock 17:07
  7. Axiom 23 / Vapour Drive 22:23
  8. Claudio Solis / Vedanta 25:44
  9. Reptant / Microstructure 30:37
  10. Reedale Rise / Foliage 34:39
  11. Zwart Licht Kommando / Teletext 40:01
  12. Underground Resistance / Beauty Of Decay 43:20
  13. LFO / LFO 46:00
  14. Danoise / RNS 47:35
  15. LFO / Groovy Distortion 49:21
  16. Eric McIntyre / Aesthetic Perception 52:18
  17. Reedale Rise / Daphnis 55:33

I found Claudio Solis' bandcamp a few weeks ago and have been enjoying his work since. SOLIS003, 004, and 006 are good releases if you're into syncopated drum programming. They're kind of wonky, in a way I like.

RNS, the cover of LFO by Danoise played here as track 14, is a demo song that comes with the tracker Renoise. It was produced in 2013, according to the song comments. I threw it in as a bit of fun, and as an excuse to A/B compare the two tracks.

All that and more Reedale Rise, a track from the excellent Pure Space PS001.1, and a lovely Psychic TV song. All good music, but some lazy arrangement.

MTT 122 / Now Drift

MTT122 Spectrogram

A bit of slow-ish music to relax with after playing the arcade. Downtempo, electro, IDM, a bit of ambient.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. The Black Dog / Empty Seat Calculations 00:00
  2. STΛQQ ƟVERFLƟ / Sacred (Grove) 02:33
  3. Scape One / I Program 05:10
  4. Pawel / Baked Beans Please 2 09:39
  5. The Pad Foundation / Elastoplast 14:08
  6. B12 / Basic Emotion 19:02
  7. Scape One / Pure Logic 23:29
  8. D'Arcangelo / Stepping Out 27:11
  9. Jacobean / Ringa Ringa Roses 30:31
  10. Monomorph / Edalb 33:38
  11. Acid Elf / Easy Night Acid 35:20
  12. Axiom 23 / Hidden Lagoon 38:32
  13. DJ R21 / Illumination 42:19
  14. Autechre / Flutter [33RPM] 47:28
  15. E.M.S. / I Take My Time 52:04
  16. DMX Krew / Jet Lag 57:20

I mentioned Axiom 23's Origins last week; it's much better than I first thought. Hidden Lagoon features in this mix, and Higher Communication was waiting in the wings if I needed to fill out time. It's an album I'll be returning to over the summer, for sure.

The copy of Mask 500 played here is the 2009 bootleg. I picked mine up used at 360 Vinyl. I've never compared it to a 1999 original, but I suspect the bootleg sounds a little faded and noisy in comparison. It's good enough for me, though; having those tracks at all is a big deal.

I don't have too much to say beyond that this week. Flutter by Autechre played at 33 sounds great, and I suspect a lot of people listen to it that way by default. I'm glad to have worked in some B12 again, I don't listen to them often enough.

And I need to stop opening shows by saying "I'm tired", heh. That's slowly crossing the line from amusing to annoying, even if it is true.

Logical Aggression @ Ground Kontrol / June 2019

Another last Wednesday, another show at Ground Kontrol Arcade. DJ Megaphysics opened the night with a good set of oldschool electro and 2000s Dutch electronic (Viewlexx, Creme, etc.). Then I took over from 11:30 PM until close. Here's what I played:

  1. Paul Hardcastle / A.M. ~11:30 PM
  2. Kraftwerk / The Telephone Call (Remix)
  3. Knightz Of Bass / Zoom
  4. Reptant / Microstructure
  5. Silicon Scally / Micron
  6. Claudio Solis / Mindless
  7. Nullptr / Skyline
  8. E Davd / Wavestation (Nu Cycle Mix)
  9. Drexciya / You Don't Know
  10. Kerr Knoll / 808 Tape
  11. Egyptian Lover / The 808
  12. T.E.S.T. / Dark Matter
  13. Dr. Futurist / Polynomial Function
  14. Axiom 23 / Vapour Drive
  15. Overmono / Yell0w_Tail
  16. Scape One / Europa's Secret
  17. Kerr Knoll / Own Your Own Reality
  18. Cybotron / R9
  19. Mandroid / Abstrakt Orange
  20. Coldcut / Timber
  21. Point Guard / The Xhase
  22. Loyal Hardware / Dust
  23. Danny Scrilla / Eclipse
  24. Om Unit / Adventures In Eden
  25. Oliver Yorke / Ryoan-Ji
  26. Margari's Kid / Titan
  27. Om Unit / Fumes
  28. Margari's Kid / Darkness Is Older Than Light
  29. Crypticz / The Crawler
  30. Marvel Cinema / Virtual Sequence
  31. Anonymi / Venturi (Jason oS Remix)
  32. dBridge & Instra:mental / Blush Response
  33. Vangelis / Blush Response
  34. Razorsnatch / Qatari Vice
  35. Decal / DummyNo4
  36. The Sentinel / Dark Matter
  37. Axiom 23 / Still Studies
  38. XY0815 / Fuck Mars, We're On Earth Now
  39. XY0815 / TRQ21 Pasadena
  40. Lapsed / Break Ya Neck (Aaron Spectre Remix)
  41. Autechre / Nil
  42. Galaxy Toobin' / Toobin' Problems ~1:45 AM

A bunch of different styles here; just scribbling all over the page for two hours and change. I played three tracks from Pure Space PS001.1, a great new comp from Australia. Also featured a bunch of music from Om Unit's Cosmic Bridge label, including two tracks from their new release We Are Ghosts Now by Margari's Kid.

Two excellent sets, four and a half hours of good music. Thanks as always to Ground Kontrol for having us, and to everyone hanging out.

Blogariddims, DJ Mix Series and Podcast

Posted 2019-06-12. Permalink. Tagged 2000s, drum & bass, dub, dubstep, idm, music, reggae, uk garage, website.

I was thinking I don't write enough, so here's a little something about what is probably my favorite series of DJ mixes.

Quoting Droid from the Blogariddims Top 50 post, who puts it better than I could:

For those that don't know, Blogariddims is a fortnightly inter-blog podcast which was started in June 2006, with the aim of showcasing the high level and variety of selecting, mixing and writing talent in the small corner of the music blogosphere inhabited by nuumskulls, faded-junglists, genre-nerds and bass addicts of every stripe.

I love Blogariddims. The combination of stellar music selection, top mixing, and track-by-track analysis is fantastic. The enthusiasm, too - you can hear the affection for each track, and read that same affection in the show notes.

Most influential on me are the dubstep and electronica mixes. Several of these DJs were in the right place at the right time to observe the creative explosion of dubstep, and were bold enough to link it with some of its less obvious influences. I'm thinking specifically of number 49, Dubtronics.

Blogariddims season 2 logo

The series concluded in October 2008 with #50, Terminus. Two years and 50 great episodes. The complete index of mixes can be found at the Blogariddims Top 50 post on weareie.com. Here are my picks, a short list of the entries I often return to:

I strongly recommend these mixes. And make sure to read the blog posts that come with them; they're consistently informative and well written. MTT is, in many ways, my attempt to emulate Blogariddims and the Blogamuffins.

MTT 119 / Broke Down

MTT119 Spectrogram

I've been feeling sick recently, so this show is on the slower side. Ambient, downtempo, hiphop, etc.; 90-100 BPM, nothing fancy.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. The War Against The Sun / Protosphere 00:00
  2. Transcend / 2003 02:22
  3. Tubeway Army / Are 'Friends' Electric? 07:37
  4. Dr. Octagon / 3000 12:32
  5. Jega / Sakura 15:27
  6. Occult Orientated Crime / Doggerland 19:17
  7. DJ Food / Inosan 22:45
  8. Neotropic / Under Violent Objects 27:30
  9. FSOL / Slider 30:54
  10. DJ Shadow / Mutual Slump 36:40
  11. Neotropic / CCTV 40:20
  12. RPM / The Inside 42:50
  13. Massive Attack / Group Four 45:01
  14. Electric Street Orchestra / Reconstruct 51:55
  15. Electric Street Orchestra / Reconstruct (Tiny Hearts Remix) 54:31
  16. Coil / Broccoli 58:26

After playing Rother's Friends Are Not Electric last week, I knew I had to play Numan's Are 'Friends' Electric? this week. That's the foolishness I brought up in my intro; that track drifts in tempo quite a bit, and can be a little tricky to mix. Fading into some Dr. Octagon afterwards was a special treat.

Electric Street Orchestra's Reconstruct (both versions) is my highlight this week. It's from The Natives EP, produced by Jeedo aka Wajeed, and released on Dirt Tech Reck in 2013. The record has some famous collaborators - Mad Mike programs the 303 lines on the A-side, and (according to discogs) Theo Parrish plays keys on Reconstruct, the B-side. I'm not sure how to characterize the music; it's some intersection of hip-hop, soul, and detroit techno. Wonderful stuff. If you're into it, be sure to check the rest of Dirt Tech Reck's catalog.

There's a lot of favorites in this hour (DJ Shadow, Legowelt, Neotropic...), but I'll leave it there. I wish I'd transitioned into Are Friends Electric a little faster and played it a little louder, but other than that I've got no major complaints. Good music for a sick day.

Shoutout and thanks to Kez of 360 Vinyl for recommending the first three Dirt Tech Reck releases.

Winding down with a few long tracks after playing the arcade last night.

  1. Jean-Paul Bondy / Delia's Temptation 00:00
  2. Luke Vibert / M.A.R.S. 04:47
  3. Datassette / J-Kick 07:52
  4. Orbital / Adnan's 11:17
  5. Andrea Parker / Empty Words 18:59
  6. DMX Krew / Lip Chime 23:41
  7. DPO / Organic Synthetic 25:14
  8. Autechre / Chatter 28:54
  9. Supreme.ja / Dreamless 34:51
  10. Dr. Futurist / Talking Cubes 38:59
  11. Kodek / Jupiter 8000 40:50
  12. Newcleus / Destination Earth (Definitive Version) 42:53
  13. Little Computer People / Friends Are Not Electric 49:50
  14. The War Against The Sun / Standard Approach Vector 56:27

Orbital's album In Sides is a long-time favorite of mine. I've loved it since I picked up the CD, shortly after its first release, back when I was in high school. There isn't a bad track on it, as far as I'm concerned. A desert island disc, for sure.

The War Against The Sun deserves a highlight here. It's a great ambient album made by Dead TV Society and Zwart Licht Kommando. You can download it from the Noxgenus website at the link above, so check it out if you liked Standard Approach Vector, because the whole album is that good.

I'll leave it there this week. The weather is warming up here, so it's time to break out the sunny electro. Check back next week for that, or something like it.
