MTT No. 047 / Metaphysica

anonradio, electro, movement through thought, music, radio // 2018-01-19

MTT047 Spectrogram

Electro this week. A few recent purchases, a few old favorites. And Metaphysica at -6%. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Sonar Base / II
  2. Silicon Scally / Chrome Introduction
  3. Silicon Scally / Coast 2 Coast
  4. AS1 / Tranquil
  5. Scape One / Fermata
  6. AS1 / Wireless State of Mind
  7. Redshape / Blink
  8. Mat Carter / Venting Steam
  9. DJ K-1 / Metaphysica
  10. Pollon / Lonely Planet
  11. Mas 2008 / World's Passing By
  12. Jon Convex / Vacuum States
  13. Silicon Scally / The Silent Years
  14. ADJ / Deeptro

I picked up both Blink and Radar, Vacuum States a few days ago and knew I had to play them. Blink is the best thing I've heard in months, awesome techno-electro. Vacuum States is right there with it, great laid-back stuff.

Lonely Planet, on the Scopex label (made famous by Objekt), is another highlight here. Tresor has recently reissued all three Scopex releases as Tresor 300 Scopex 98/00. I couldn't recommend it enough; some of the best electro of the late '90s. It doesn't appear to be available digitally, which is unfortunate.

Last I'd like to mention Silicon Scally's The Silent Years. I've played all three tracks from it on this show, two this week and one ("Informatics") during MTT010 / According To A Plan. I've played it so much my vinyl copy is starting to wear out. Eventually I'll have to buy the digital release. Fantastic tunes.

MTT No. 046 / Storyteller

anonradio, movement through thought, music, radio, techno // 2018-01-12

MTT046 Spectrogram

Techno this week. What I think of as early-2000s techno, though that isn't at all accurate. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Max Duley / Start The End
  2. Ingen / Lusher
  3. Takaaki Itoh / Step To Makin' (Max Duley Remix)
  4. Casual Violence / Rotate Cube
  5. Cyp / Arranging
  6. Go Hiyama / World Game (Oscar Mulero Remix)
  7. Matt French / Information Sewer
  8. Inigo Kennedy / Nocturnal
  9. Random Logic / Untitled [Kial03 B2]
  10. T-101 / Ironworks
  11. Mike Parker / Inversion 8
  12. Outline / Untitled [BP05 B3]
  13. Jean-Louis Huhta / Zoat Zingo
  14. Inigo Kennedy / Albedo
  15. Damon Wild vs. Function / Waveterm
  16. Cyp / Obscurity
  17. Max Duley / Storyteller
  18. Oscar Mulero / Naked Dance

The selection here (and my taste in techno in general) is inspired by the records I found in used bins around Portland in the mid 2000s. Particularly the used bins at 360 Vinyl. A lot of weird, dark, and uncomfortable stuff made its way into those bins.

The first artist I found in those bins that really connected with me is Max Duley. I love the drum programming in his tunes, the use of FX, and the simple repeating synth patterns. To me it sounds otherworldly, hypnotic. Duley has made the releases on his own labels, ARC and ARC(ANE), available for free via his blog. They're great, and I recommend them to anybody who liked this mix.

The second artist I found was probably Inigo Kennedy. I believe I bought a few of his records on Molecular Recordings, though the only MOL record I seem to have now is XX.3. Later I found his netlabel, Asymmetric, and consumed all of it pretty quickly.

Much later, while researching netlabels, I found Biomechanics. Their releases in the BMT series are in line with the techno I'd look for in the bins; particularly the artists Casual Violence and Cyp. There's some good Dub Techno on the label, too. The Internet Archive has a copy of their catalog.

I don't DJ techno like this very often, as it doesn't go over well with the crowd I play for, but I do love it.

MTT No. 045 / Undercurrent

anonradio, breaks, downtempo, electro, movement through thought, music, radio // 2018-01-05

MTT045 Spectrogram

Grab bag show. Electro new & old, breaks (or downtempo?), a little acid. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. London Modular Alliance / DeOrbit_118
  2. Nullptr / Sclera
  3. Datawave / Nebulos
  4. Electronic Corporation / ...Something Better Than Man?
  5. Dark Vektor / 8
  6. Electronic Corporation / 1984
  7. London Modular Alliance / Out Of Sync
  8. Anthony Rother / Justitia
  9. The Infiltrator / Thought 1
  10. MK2 / Burial Mix (RYU Instrumental Mix)
  11. Voigt Kampff / 6:15
  12. Eggfooyoung / Gloves
  13. Nukubus / People Move On
  14. DMX Krew / Synchrotron Blue
  15. Vertical67 / Distortion
  16. Electronic Corporation / Dark Characters
  17. LektroiD / Darktones
  18. Darxid / Flashback

Burial Mix (RYU Instrumental) is an odd piece I found in a used bin. RYU is DJ Hide, DJ Krush, and DJ Sak. It's played in this mix at 45 RPM (it's meant to be played at 33). I think it works well at that speed.

Three tracks by Electronic Corporation are featured. EC is Ive Müller and René Kirchner, who are probably better known as MAS 2008. Electronic Corporation is also the name of their record label. All three tracks included in this mix are from their album Construction Deconstruction, which I love.

Some good tracks this week.

MTT No. 044 / Shine

anonradio, demoscene, downtempo, idm, movement through thought, music, radio // 2017-12-29

MTT044 Spectrogram

Downtempo, IDM and a couple of old Impulse Tracker mods lazily mixed together. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. The Sushi Club / Shiosai
  2. Aaron Spectre / Voices
  3. RS3 / Ray
  4. Boards of Canada / Hi Scores
  5. Bola / Effanajor
  6. RS3 / Beam
  7. Being / Adjustable
  8. Frequent C / Haze
  9. RS3 / Prism
  10. LFO / Think A Moment

This mix is largely an excuse to hear Ray, Beam and Prism by RS3. Written using Impulse Tracker around 2000 (I think), these are three of my favorite tracker modules. RS3 later went on to start (or maybe join?) the group Hellven and release some pretty cool tracks.

My copy of Shiosai by The Sushi Club is on the Space Night Vol. VIII compilation on Elektrolux records. Space Night is, quoting wikipedia:

the name of a German television program in the early night/morning hours each day. It is a mixture of chill-out-music and images of the earth as seen from space interspersed with informative broadcasts.

I've caught a little bit of it on youtube, and it's cool. I wish it was on TV here in the US.

The last selection I'm going to talk about is Haze by Frequent C AKA Josh Walund, who I mentioned last week as one half of Rb387. Haze (and the whole Broken Sun EP) is a great Boards of Canada-inspired piece. Check out the first One on Twoism compilation for more BoC-inspired tracks like it... and check out the Twoism forums in general.

That's it from me today. Check back next week (in 2018!) for another show.

MTT No. 043 / Demosong

anonradio, chiptune, demoscene, idm, movement through thought, music, radio // 2017-12-22

MTT043 Spectrogram

Chiptune, demoscene, doskpop, and a few later IDM-y mods. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Pink / Classic Tunes
  2. Purple Motion / Aquaphobia
  3. Lizardking / Compulsion To Obey
  4. Unknown Artist / Dirt
  5. Tempest / Friday
  6. Necros / Arcadia
  7. The Finn / 12 Feet of Deepness
  8. Rb387 / I Can't Die.
  9. Mefis / Sun
  10. Makunouchi Bento / Mikrotori
  11. Lonewolf / UFO
  12. Nagz / Worms In Sineland
  13. Tempest / Anticipation
  14. Bass / Dicky Faty Loremy
  15. Purple Motion / Satellite One
  16. Basehead / Smooth Operator
  17. Atheist & Jazz / Nuse Up'42
  18. Pink / Alloy Run
  19. Skaven / Autonomous
  20. Necros / Wired '96 Report
  21. Captain / Space Debris
  22. Necros / Winter's Dream (Remix of Blah)
  23. Chris Jarvis / Stairway
  24. Rb387 / Calm Sounds... and piano

Every song included in this mix is a tracker module file that was rendered to .wav with Modplug Tracker. For some background information on what a tracker module is, check out the Tracker Music page over at Wikipedia.

This is a sound I was into in the late '90s and early 2000s, back in the days of dialup. The days of Traxinspace and Modarchive. It's a tradition of mine to dig up and listen to these mods in the weeks around my birthday. Looking at the clock now, it's my birthday as I write this.

Four tracks come from the Emissions 3 musicdisk, specifically part two of Emissions 3. Part 1 is all chiptune, and contains a great (and unexpected) arrangement of "House of the Rising Sun".

Necros appears three times in this mix, and would have appeared more, but I held myself back. I'm a huge Necros fan. I'll probably dedicate a full hour to him before the end of 2018.

The Makunouchi Bento track in this mix is not the remastered version available on their bandcamp page. It's the original .xm version released by Eerik Inpuj Sound as inpuj032. The exported .xm sounded better in the mix... having said that, I'm grateful that Makunouchi Bento offer a remastered version.

Finally, shoutout to my friends Koonat and Jawsh for getting me into this music back in high school. They appear in this mix as Rb387, the best tracker mod group to come out of McMinnville. Most of the songs here are in fact from a collection that Jawsh burnt to a CD and gave me ~15 years ago. Thanks guys; without you I'd be a very different person.

MTT No. 042 / Still Searching

anonradio, electro, movement through thought, music, radio, synthpop, techno // 2017-12-15

MTT042 Spectrogram

Electro & Techno this week (with a surprise appearance by Ultravox). Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. X-103 / Tephra (Under)
  2. Aux 88 / We Make Beats
  3. The Advent / Light Years Away
  4. Dynarec / Double Jix (Original Mix)
  5. Datentraeger / Manipulation
  6. Luke Eargoggle & Kan3da / Night Smoker
  7. Lerosa / Loss (Remix)
  8. Gosub / Last Night At The Stardust
  9. Ultravox / Mr. X
  10. Dopplereffekt / Delta Wave
  11. =UHU= / Quark Plane
  12. VCS2600 / Deep Sea Robotics
  13. The Advent / Dawn Of Light
  14. Dynarec / Opposing Combinations
  15. Automat / Hardware
  16. The Advent / Telecom
  17. The Advent / Gamma Rays

There's a whopping four tracks by The Advent in this mix, three of which are from the album Light Years Away. It's an incredibly good (and overlooked) album, full of awesome Drexciyan tunes.

Ultravox's Mr. X is included here thanks to this post on reddit's /r/electro. It happened to fit perfectly with what I've been listening to lately. (And it's an awesome song, of course).

Next week I plan to do something special (and possibly lazy), so keep an eye out for that.

MTT No. 041 / Leave The Rest

anonradio, electro, movement through thought, music, radio, techno // 2017-12-08

MTT041 Spectrogram

Cold(ish?) Electro and Techno for December. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Dynarec / Solstice Part 1
  2. NRSB-11 / Consumer Programming
  3. Ectomorph / Satori
  4. Platex / Latex
  5. Elecktroids / Stun Gun
  6. Franck Kartell / Mox
  7. Gosub / Blind World
  8. Ghostwerk / 接続する (Connect)
  9. Arpanet / Illuminated Displays
  10. Kan3da / GBG
  11. VCS2600 / Verilog Circuit Synthesis
  12. NRSB-11 / Bioethics
  13. AS1 / R.F.I.D.
  14. Franck Kartell / Atomic Shelter
  15. DMX Krew / Echelon
  16. VCS2600 / Antigravity Technology
  17. NRSB-11 / Offshore Banking
  18. Cybotron / Industrial Lies
  19. Dynarec / Solstice Part 2

There's a lot of Gerald Donald related projects in this. NRSB-11, Elecktroids, Arpanet; five tracks total. Commodified and Elektroworld in particular are stunning.

Consumer Programming, R.F.I.D., Echelon, and Industrial Lies form a sort of sub-theme. Tracks with paranoid vocals, you might call it.

The version of R.F.I.D. here is from the third Solar One Music compilation. I've heard versions of it that don't include the vocal, presumably released on Transient Force, but the SOM Comp 3 version still has it. Text-to-speech, that's where it's at. Sad I cut it a bit short.

Industrial Lies snuck in at the last second; I mixed a bit faster than I anticipated. The copy I have is a '90s repress of the Clear 12" on Fantasy (D-216). Incredibly ahead of its time for 1983.

Some flubs in this one, but it's mostly OK. I can live with it.

MTT No. 040 / Steady Creep

ambient, anonradio, electro, hiphop, idm, movement through thought, music, radio, vaporwave // 2017-12-01

MTT040 Spectrogram

Slow IDM & Electro to close out November 2017. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Access To Arasaka / Caph
  2. Bitstream / Pylon
  3. Dexterous Numerics / Absent Friends
  4. Ghostwerk / When I Creep
  5. Subaeris / ゴースト発生
  6. MANASYt / Apathetics
  7. Chris Randall / Oblique
  8. Headset ft. Subtitle / Breath Contrails
  9. Wayne & Nick / Slev (Ghostwerk Remix)
  10. While / Rail
  11. Mike Kidd / Bilocation
  12. DPO / Endospore
  13. DPO / Isolated Extermination
  14. Being / Tide One Two Three
  15. Porn Darstellar / Dans Le Satin Blanc

Spacesettings by Headset is outstanding. A weird IDM / Hip-Hop / Jazz hybrid album... The closest comparison I can think of is Arrhythmia by Antipop Consortium. The whole album is as good as Breath Contrails.

I'm sad to say I treated Tides by Being (AKA The Wee DJs, AKA Dave Paton) pretty badly here. It's an amazing '90s IDM (or maybe Ambient?) album and deserves better than being filler between DPO and the goofy (but also awesome) Nights In White Satin cover by Porn Darstellar.

Last, I'll highlight Shadow Culture by Ghostwerk. Ghostwerk has been putting out awesome (and weird) tunes for about five years now; Shadow Culture marks his first release on a "major" label (in this case the excellent Detroit Underground). I've been waiting for this album for two years, and it doesn't disappoint.

Finally: shoutout to ellen_page. I also dream of future trackers.
