MTT051 Spectrogram

A bit of techno, a bit of electro. Some lazy mixing.
Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Model 500 / Milky Way
  2. AS1 / Coming For You
  3. E.R.P. / Gleaning Creation
  4. Drexciya / Aquatic Bata Particles
  5. Komarken Electronics / Bubble Theory
  6. Scape One / Distinct Century
  7. DJ Stingray / NKKK4_2
  8. Model 500 / Mind Changes
  9. Dan White / Bunjil
  10. Legowelt / Forest Conditioner
  11. Mikron / Re-Entry
  12. Komarken Electronics / Early Mornings (Delta Funktionen Remix)
  13. Kovyazin D & Moralez / Black Moon
  14. DMX Krew / Street Boys
  15. Scape One / End Credits

I don't have a whole lot to say about this week's show. Five tracks from the Brokntoys label made it in, which is cool. There's a bunch of four-on-the-floor music on Brokntoys that I still haven't figured out how to play, so I might do another show like this in the future.

I would like to highlight one release, and that's Legowelt's The Teac Life. It was released (for free) in 2011 on Legowelt's website; that's when I first heard it. He's since made it re-released it (again, for free) on bandcamp. I highly recommend it. It's a great techno album for commutes. Very dreamy. I'm definitely going to be playing more of it this spring.

MTT046 Spectrogram

Techno this week. What I think of as early-2000s techno, though that isn't at all accurate. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Max Duley / Start The End
  2. Ingen / Lusher
  3. Takaaki Itoh / Step To Makin' (Max Duley Remix)
  4. Casual Violence / Rotate Cube
  5. Cyp / Arranging
  6. Go Hiyama / World Game (Oscar Mulero Remix)
  7. Matt French / Information Sewer
  8. Inigo Kennedy / Nocturnal
  9. Random Logic / Untitled [Kial03 B2]
  10. T-101 / Ironworks
  11. Mike Parker / Inversion 8
  12. Outline / Untitled [BP05 B3]
  13. Jean-Louis Huhta / Zoat Zingo
  14. Inigo Kennedy / Albedo
  15. Damon Wild vs. Function / Waveterm
  16. Cyp / Obscurity
  17. Max Duley / Storyteller
  18. Oscar Mulero / Naked Dance

The selection here (and my taste in techno in general) is inspired by the records I found in used bins around Portland in the mid 2000s. Particularly the used bins at 360 Vinyl. A lot of weird, dark, and uncomfortable stuff made its way into those bins.

The first artist I found in those bins that really connected with me is Max Duley. I love the drum programming in his tunes, the use of FX, and the simple repeating synth patterns. To me it sounds otherworldly, hypnotic. Duley has made the releases on his own labels, ARC and ARC(ANE), available for free via his blog. They're great, and I recommend them to anybody who liked this mix.

The second artist I found was probably Inigo Kennedy. I believe I bought a few of his records on Molecular Recordings, though the only MOL record I seem to have now is XX.3. Later I found his netlabel, Asymmetric, and consumed all of it pretty quickly.

Much later, while researching netlabels, I found Biomechanics. Their releases in the BMT series are in line with the techno I'd look for in the bins; particularly the artists Casual Violence and Cyp. There's some good Dub Techno on the label, too. The Internet Archive has a copy of their catalog.

I don't DJ techno like this very often, as it doesn't go over well with the crowd I play for, but I do love it.

MTT042 Spectrogram

Electro & Techno this week (with a surprise appearance by Ultravox). Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. X-103 / Tephra (Under)
  2. Aux 88 / We Make Beats
  3. The Advent / Light Years Away
  4. Dynarec / Double Jix (Original Mix)
  5. Datentraeger / Manipulation
  6. Luke Eargoggle & Kan3da / Night Smoker
  7. Lerosa / Loss (Remix)
  8. Gosub / Last Night At The Stardust
  9. Ultravox / Mr. X
  10. Dopplereffekt / Delta Wave
  11. =UHU= / Quark Plane
  12. VCS2600 / Deep Sea Robotics
  13. The Advent / Dawn Of Light
  14. Dynarec / Opposing Combinations
  15. Automat / Hardware
  16. The Advent / Telecom
  17. The Advent / Gamma Rays

There's a whopping four tracks by The Advent in this mix, three of which are from the album Light Years Away. It's an incredibly good (and overlooked) album, full of awesome Drexciyan tunes.

Ultravox's Mr. X is included here thanks to this post on reddit's /r/electro. It happened to fit perfectly with what I've been listening to lately. (And it's an awesome song, of course).

Next week I plan to do something special (and possibly lazy), so keep an eye out for that.

MTT No. 041 / Leave The Rest

MTT041 Spectrogram

Cold(ish?) Electro and Techno for December. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Dynarec / Solstice Part 1
  2. NRSB-11 / Consumer Programming
  3. Ectomorph / Satori
  4. Platex / Latex
  5. Elecktroids / Stun Gun
  6. Franck Kartell / Mox
  7. Gosub / Blind World
  8. Ghostwerk / 接続する (Connect)
  9. Arpanet / Illuminated Displays
  10. Kan3da / GBG
  11. VCS2600 / Verilog Circuit Synthesis
  12. NRSB-11 / Bioethics
  13. AS1 / R.F.I.D.
  14. Franck Kartell / Atomic Shelter
  15. DMX Krew / Echelon
  16. VCS2600 / Antigravity Technology
  17. NRSB-11 / Offshore Banking
  18. Cybotron / Industrial Lies
  19. Dynarec / Solstice Part 2

There's a lot of Gerald Donald related projects in this. NRSB-11, Elecktroids, Arpanet; five tracks total. Commodified and Elektroworld in particular are stunning.

Consumer Programming, R.F.I.D., Echelon, and Industrial Lies form a sort of sub-theme. Tracks with paranoid vocals, you might call it.

The version of R.F.I.D. here is from the third Solar One Music compilation. I've heard versions of it that don't include the vocal, presumably released on Transient Force, but the SOM Comp 3 version still has it. Text-to-speech, that's where it's at. Sad I cut it a bit short.

Industrial Lies snuck in at the last second; I mixed a bit faster than I anticipated. The copy I have is a '90s repress of the Clear 12" on Fantasy (D-216). Incredibly ahead of its time for 1983.

Some flubs in this one, but it's mostly OK. I can live with it.

MTT No. 038 / Basslines & Synthetic Claps

MTT038 Spectrogram

Disco, techno, electro. Some jams this week. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Bangkok Impact / Crowdpleaser
  2. Orgue Electronique ft. Luke Eargoggle / Den Bosch
  3. Kitbuilders / Give It To Me
  4. Legowelt / Conquestadores Extraterrestriales (Remix)
  5. Gosub / Strange City
  6. Japanese Telecom / Virtual Origami 2
  7. Blackploid / Photographic Photogenic
  8. Japanese Telecom / Character Maps (Perspects Remix)
  9. Raiders of the Lost Arp / Workflow
  10. Cybotron / Alleys Of Your Mind
  11. A Number Of Names / Sharevari (Vocal)
  12. Ectomorph / Lost Angles (Manyangles Version)
  13. Perspects / They Keep Dancing (Instrumental)
  14. Gino Soccio / Remember (VICTIM OF CHANGE edit)
  15. Telex / Moskow Diskow (Original French Version)
  16. Private Lives / Private Life (Extended Mix)
  17. Solvent / My Radio
  18. Bangkok Impact / Traveller (Part 2)

The Strange City - Virtual Origami 2 - Photographic Photogenic segment is a neat little Gerald Donald-ian diversion in the middle of this mix. It's pointed out on the discogs page for Blackploid's Inhaltsverzeichnis EP that Photographic Photogenic sounds a lot like Virtual Origami 2; the commenter was right, and it makes for a nice (and very quick) little mix.

All of the old "real" disco tracks included here (Remember, Moskow Diskow, arguably Sharevari) are unauthorized bootlegs. It still surprises me that something so difficult to manufacture as vinyl gets bootlegged that way.

Private Life is one that made it into the shops when I was actively buying records in ~2007. It's one of my favorites. Private Lives, the artist, turns out to be Cylob & Ed DMX. (According to discogs, anyway).

Finally, My Radio by Solvent. From the second of the three Disco Nouveau records, which I've mentioned before. I'll say again: that compilation is extremely good. This mix includes two other tracks from it, Lost Angles and They Keep Dancing. But My Radio takes the prize. A song of loss and disappointment direct at a radio. Look up the lyrics!

MTT No. 031 / Glide

MTT031 Spectrogram

Techno (House? IDM?) for a tired Thursday night. Unfortunately, due to a connection issue, the last 10 minutes of this episode were not recorded. If you'd like to listen anyway, then right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. The Black Dog / Train By The Autobahn (Robert Hood's 8 Mile Remix)
  2. John Shima / Depopulation
  3. Trackman / Smoothing
  4. LFO / You Have To Understand
  5. B12 / Obsessed
  6. John Shima / Final Horizon
  7. The Black Dog / Northern Electronic Soul (Part 1)
  8. The Black Dog / Northern Electronic Soul (Part 2)
  9. The Black Dog / Northern Electronic Soul (Part 3)
  10. Gliese / G-876
  11. A Guy Called Gerald / Iland
  12. A Guy Called Gerald / Indi Vibe
  13. Dark Matrix / Untitled [LSF007 C3]
  14. New Adult / Hometown

This mix is arranged around the two John Shima tracks, and Hometown by New Adult. I found the two John Shima EPs on Binalog Productions earlier this week, and immediately started combing my music collection for similar music (B12, Black Dog, LFO, etc.).

The last two tracks - the Dark Matrix tune, and Hometown - are missing from the mp3 linked above. I think, before next week, I'll look into modifying the way I broadcast so that I can save a local copy of the recording.

MTT028 Spectrogram

Mellow electro and techno this week. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. STΛQQ ƟVERFLƟ / Lonesome (Glade)
  2. Versalife / Artificial Affection
  3. Scape One / Europa's Secret
  4. Dez Williams / Weathered
  5. Sigma Algebra / Funaphy
  6. Scape One / Internal Symmetry
  7. Gliese / Cosmic Breeze
  8. Nimoy / Smoking
  9. Dan White / Digital Detox
  10. DJ R21 / A.L.S.
  11. Mikron / Black Sands
  12. Króm / Cowtipping
  13. Bitstream / Monolith
  14. F.O.T.N. / State Of Mind

The Brokntoys and Elektrodos releases here are recent purchases. I haven't quite figured out how to play them yet. Really great stuff, though. I've been listening to that Versalife release on repeat since I bought it.

The juxtaposition of Cosmic Breeze by Gliese and Smoking by Nimoy is a bit goofy but I love it. Mainly for that guitar sound.

And obviously Monolith by Bitstream is amazing. So emotional. If only I hadn't missed my cue. Ah, well. There's always next time.

MTT027 Spectrogram

This week: selections from old bass CDs... and a bit of Model 500. Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Bass 305 / Pure Tone - Bass! (Low Frequency Audio Version)
  2. Eurobass Express / The Art Of Slow Bass (BBC Boom Radio Mix)
  3. Circuit Breaker / 3 Wheel Motion
  4. Techmaster P.E.B. / Do You Like Technobass?
  5. Beat Dominator / Jurassic Bass
  6. MC A.D.E. and Posse / Bass Rock Express (Instrumental)
  7. Techno Bass Crew / Cosmic Lullaby
  8. Bass 305 / Look Aggressively Towards The Future (Interactive Bass Test)
  9. Beat Dominator / Music's Hypnotizing
  10. Circuit Breaker / Debonaire's Drop
  11. Silicon / Bass Experience
  12. Model 500 / The Passage
  13. Bass 305 / Space Travel (Low Frequency Digital Mix)
  14. Techno Bass Crew / Computer Language
  15. Dynamix II / Machine Planet
  16. Dynamix II / Dream Scape
  17. Beat Dominator / Deep Dream

My favorite here is definitely Bass Experience by Silicon. (Not Heath Brunner, a different Silicon...) After that I'd say Machine Planet by Dynamix II. It doesn't quite fit in this mix, but I wanted to hear it, so there you go.

This show marks the end of bass month. I'm happy I've had a chance to play this stuff, and extra-happy I now have recordings of these sets. Now it's time to put these records away. Until next August, when bass month begins again.
