MTT No. 089 / Shockwave Rider

Posted 2018-11-09. Permalink. Tagged anonradio, dub techno, electro, idm, movement through thought, music, radio.

MTT089 Spectrogram

Electro this week. Rocking out to some old tracks, some new. An excuse to play a few recent purchases.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Erosion / 3 00:00
  2. London Modular Alliance / Tinker 02:00
  3. Scape One / Galaxy Of Funk 04:41
  4. Chaotic State / Cubic Rube 07:22
  5. Miotek & Salmz / First Contact (Sync 24 Remix) 11:00
  6. Dr. Futurist / The Möbius Strip 13:21
  7. Drexciya / Triangular Hydrogen Strain 16:05
  8. Morphology / Dalek Invasion 19:51
  9. Plant43 / Ubicomp Malfunction 22:55
  10. E.R.P. / Wisteria 27:10
  11. Gosub / Lost In Our Ways 30:43
  12. Dexter / Midnight Cruiser 36:10
  13. E.R.P. / Repose 39:26
  14. Vertical67 / Morphed Reality 44:25
  15. Robyrt Hecht / Time To Shift (Amper Clap's Kit Kat Remix) 48:46
  16. Komarken Electronics / Expanded Consciousness 52:36
  17. Gescom / Motor 1 56:49

I picked up the two Morphology and three Plant43 releases on Semantica last month and had intended to play them this week, but only one track by each artist made it in. E.R.P.'s Repose is also on Semantica, part of a series called Evoked Potentials. All very good albums. Pulp sci-fi outer space electro.

A lot of old favorites made it into this mix. Galaxy Of Funk, Lost In Our Ways, Midnight Cruiser... I think I've been playing those three tracks regularly since they were released, back in the mid 2000s. Gosub's Lost In Our Ways from the Low Volume Lovers EP on Frustrated Funk is particularly good. There are no bad tracks on that 12".

The mixing this week was a bit shaky but dang was it fun. I didn't put much thought into the selection, just picked good tracks and cut loose. I think I'll do something like this again next week, so check back for that.

MTT088 Spectrogram

Ambient and IDM to start this November. This is a pretty sleepy mix relative to what I usually play.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Albert Kuningas / Sateenkaarisilta 00:00
  2. Brothomstates / In 03:10
  3. Global Communication / 8:07 07:53
  4. Bola / Sirasancerre 15:45
  5. The Pad Foundation / Snow Day 20:20
  6. User48736353001 / 19 Ssnb 24:35
  7. Underworld / Most 'Ospitable 30:10
  8. The Black Dog / Business Car Park 9 35:25
  9. Autechre / Further 39:38
  10. Skinny Puppy / The Centre Bullet 47:08
  11. Albert Kuningas / Lusifer-komeetta 54:34
  12. Black Rain / Night City Tokyo 58:23

The version of Underworld's Most 'Ospitable played here is a digital recording from the Footwear Repairs By Craftsmen At Competitive Prices VHS tape. I think this is the first time I've ever played material sourced from VHS while DJing. Footwear Repairs is a collection of the early '90s Underworld videos. I think the videos are all on youtube now, and are definitely worth seeking out if you like Underworld.

The transition from Business Car Park 9 into Autechre's Further is my favorite part of this mix. Further will always make me think of Quake 3 Defrag player w3sp's famous video f33l, due to its inclusion there.

That's October done and November started. Expect more conventional sets this month - midtempo space-y electro, probably some more IDM, etc. Thank you all for listening and I'll catch you next week.

MTT No. 086 / The Nameless City

MTT086 Spectrogram

Ambient, electro, IDM, industrial... an odd mixture this week. Another grab-bag show.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. NNYNYX / Slipgate 00:00
  2. Hadamard / Untitled [Bunker 3071 B3] 01:21
  3. Sonar Base / Blunted 02:44
  4. RS3 / A Vile Pattern 05:25
  5. Skinny Puppy / Dal 09:14
  6. Headscan / Lolife 14:01
  7. Haujobb / Trivial 18:11
  8. Ignatius / Eloper (Gasp Remix) 18:59
  9. Phoenecia / Eyebrow 21:55
  10. NNYNYX / A Thousand Young 26:51
  11. Uniflux / Hypaedrone 29:36
  12. Anthony Rother / Biomechanik (Internal Groove Mix) 33:48
  13. Poison Arrow / If You Don't Love Me (I'll Cut Your Face) (Razor Dub) 37:13
  14. DPO / Germ Cells 43:21
  15. Dark Vektor / Espeluztacular 45:45
  16. Shadowbunny / Varun Kai Physics 50:56
  17. Inkamera ft. Bogdan W. Rousseau / No Dead Men's Cries 55:49
  18. C/∆/T / Dull Hunger 58:24

If You Don't Love Me (I'll Cut Your Face) is my current favorite here. Something about the chopped vocal at the end reminds me of The Art Of Noise, in a good way. It's been out for about six months now, part of the excellent Pleasure District series on Exit Records UK.

I'm a bit braindead this week and don't feel like saying much, so I'll close with this:

MTT No. 083 / Armchair Tour

Posted 2018-09-28. Permalink. Tagged anonradio, demoscene, downtempo, idm, movement through thought, music, radio, vaporwave.

MTT083 Spectrogram

Downtempo, IDM, a bit of old demoscene, a bit of vaporwave. Chill-out music, mostly.

Unfortunately my internet connection dropped a little over halfway through this show. Robot DJ Kumata, aNONradio's mascot DJ, played J-Pop and soundtracks during this period - from roughly 34:48 to 41:32 in the recording.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Basehead / Shades Of Night 4 (Sea At Dawn) 00:00
  2. RS3 / Optic Embrace 04:16
  3. Dogon / Fool's Walk 09:13
  4. Zoomin' ft. Fay Saphirah / Purify Myself (Instr.) 12:12
  5. User18081971 / 14 Cornish Spreek5b (St. Nectan S Glen Waterfalls Mix) 17:37
  6. User48736353001 / (Watery Big EZ) 20:48
  7. DeepWoods / Heavy Rain 23:06
  8. Creta Kano / Skyway 81 26:59
  9. t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者 / 蒸気涙 31:07
  10. Quantum Leap / Sofa Music 34:30
  11. Internet dropout; robot DJ Kumata takes over from 34:48 to 41:32
  12. Cabaret Voltaire / Harmonic Parallel 41:33
  13. Orbital / Times Fly (Slow) 44:24
  14. Amon Tobin / Piranha Breaks 48:41
  15. [sub] / Sensualism 51:49
  16. Boymerang / Secret Life 56:54

I picked up Creta Kano's Skyway Motel this month (from Boomkat) and that served as the inspiration for this hour. I'm happy and a bit surprised the mix from Heavy Rain to Skyway 81 worked. And then on to proper vaporwave from t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者...

Two tracks were taken from the Space Night Vol. VIII compilation on Elektrolux. Specifically track 4 Purify Myself and track 10 Sofa Music. It's a sweet comp, one I've played tracks from before, see MTT018 and MTT044.

This was a pretty good set! Good for a quick few hours picking tracks and winging it, anyway. Sad about the connection drop, but that'll happen from time to time. I might rework this into something more cohesive in the future.

MTT No. 082 / Fly Away

Posted 2018-09-21. Permalink. Tagged acid, anonradio, house, idm, movement through thought, music, radio, techno.

MTT082 Spectrogram

More house and techno, a bit of IDM, a bit of acid. Mostly kind of lo-fi. A bunch of tracks I wanted to hear.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. The War Against The Sun / Protostellar 00:00
  2. Aril Brikha / Embrace 01:33
  3. R.M / Chikyu-u 001 05:09
  4. Dangerous Frontiers / South Central 08:54
  5. Kenny Larkin / Butterflies 14:30
  6. Omar-S / Flying Gorgars 18:53
  7. Aphex Twin / Ptolemy 22:51
  8. User48736353001 / Lannerlog 25:16
  9. Legowelt / Beyond Ur Self 27:39
  10. Dan White / Ghost Train 31:33
  11. Legowelt / The Soul Of A City 34:38
  12. Zwart Licht Kommando / Tape Deck 38:53
  13. Chris Moss Acid / Niacin's Touch 43:25
  14. Omar S / Psychotic Photosynthesis 48:01
  15. Legowelt / U Can Fly Away From The Hood If U Want 54:11

This mix is the result of listening to Legowelt's TEAC Life all week. All three Legowelt tracks included are from TEAC Life. Highest possible recommendation for that album; it's fantastic and should be heard by everyone interested in house and techno. And it's free, so there's no reason to avoid it.

The other highlight here, beyond Legowelt's tracks, are the two tracks by Omar-S. Flying Gorgars and Psychotic Photosynthesis, both massive tracks. Gorgars is available from his website as wav; Photosynthesis appears to still be available as a 12" from the same website. Photosynthesis in particular is huge, just so good. Wonderfully hypnotic stuff.

This one is alright! It scratched an itch. The track choices are a bit weird, and it doesn't totally work, but the tracks are good, so I guess it balances out.

MTT No. 080 / Stare Into Space

Posted 2018-09-07. Permalink. Tagged anonradio, electro, idm, movement through thought, music, radio.

MTT080 Spectrogram

An hour of relatively low-intensity modern electro. Something to come down from last month's shows.

Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Anthony Rother / Magic Diner Part 9 00:00
  2. Autopilot / Electro Birds 00:38
  3. Delayscape / Sleeptro 05:02
  4. MetaComplex / Implanted Sounds 08:30
  5. üNN / Reality 12:30
  6. Transparent Sound & Scape One & Karoshi / My Private Cosmos 16:23
  7. Dogon vs. Wee DJs / Space Odyssee 2012 22:05
  8. XY0815 / End Of Your Orbit 25:08
  9. Full Moon Fashions / Electric Ghana 28:36
  10. Vertical67 / Cosmos 32:20
  11. Delayscape / Dryness 35:00
  12. Adrià Duch / Licking My Wounds 38:08
  13. Il.Ek.Tro / Tune In (To The System) 40:38
  14. Freezie Freekie / Slow Decay 45:12
  15. Silicon Scally / Rendered 49:28
  16. G.D. Luxxe & Solvent / Quiet Life 51:09
  17. ADJ / Hope 56:31

This is music I've had for a long time - old Silicon Scally, Elektrolux, Satamile, Touchin' Bass, etc. I think the most recent acquisition here is Licking My Wounds by Adrià Duch, the one broken-beat track on a pretty sweet dub techno release.

Quiet Life by G.D. Luxxe & Solvent stands out in this selection. First released on Snow Robots Vol. 2 on Suction Records, the copy I played here is from the Star Gazing compilation on Guidance Recordings. Shoutout and thank you to Tobias B. for the copy of Star Gazing.

I don't have too much to say about this set. Good tracks, loose mixing, uneven levels. Was a fun way to spend my Thursday evening.

MTT No. 067 / Drive (To Nowhere)

Posted 2018-06-08. Permalink. Tagged anonradio, breaks, electro, idm, movement through thought, music, radio.

MTT067 Spectrogram

A mix of breaks, IDM, and electro this week. It sounds like... nonsense. Heh.
Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Luke Vibert / Reality Check 00:00
  2. Sint / Off To Work 03:49
  3. Fellmann & Louise / Chicken Sandwich 06:07
  4. Wenzel / Latenight Drive 09:03
  5. Paul Hardcastle / King Tut 13:31
  6. Facade / The Groove (Drive To Hollywood Version) 17:35
  7. Hashim / Chateau Vie (Castle Life) 22:04
  8. Intelligent Concept / Keep Da' Groove 25:09
  9. Nagz / Daughter of Time 29:32
  10. Tusken Raiders / Sexy Sandpeople 31:35
  11. Dagobert / Ready To Rock (Electronic Religion) 34:32
  12. Imatran Voima / Commando (Sbassship Remix) 36:52
  13. Brothomstates / Rktic 40:48
  14. Two Lines / Lexo 1000 45:21
  15. Outputmessage / Bernard's Song 51:12
  16. Hajimari ft. Jai Tee / Untitled 56:16

I'm feeling particularly braindead today, so I'll keep my comments short.

Nagz' Daugher of Time is supremely awesome and way, way too short. I've played Nagz once before on MTT. There's a directory full of his Fasttracker 2 mods on my hard drive that I need to go through. Might be a good idea to do a few extended edits, too.

Brothomstates' Rktic is the only record I have on the Warp sublabel Arcola. I'm a huge fan of Brothomstates, as I've mentioned before. It's a killer 12". The b-side - Matala Bobo - is just as good as Rktic.

The Lexo 1000 to Bernard's Song transition is one I particularly like, and have done a few times at Ground Kontrol. Both tracks are from very good (and very different) compilations.

I don't know what the selection will look like next week. I'll spend my time thinking sunny thoughts, and we'll see what happens.

MTT No. 066 / Less Filling

Posted 2018-06-01. Permalink. Tagged ambient, anonradio, idm, movement through thought, music, radio.

MTT066 Spectrogram

Some recent IDM-y acquisitions, some old tunes. The customary chill end-of-the-month show.
Right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download the mix from aNONradio's archives.

  1. Being / Sular Two 00:00
  2. Link / Arcadian (Global Communication Remix) 05:35
  3. Higher Intelligence Agency / ting 12:45
  4. Metamatics / Heddon Zara Spook 18:15
  5. XY0815 / Fuck Mars, We're On Earth Now 23:56
  6. XY0815 / TRQ21 Pasadena 25:40
  7. Micronaut / CMU 27:47
  8. Micronaut / Nevermore 31:52
  9. Higher Intelligence Agency / Hubble 35:00
  10. Micronaut / Ac33d 41:04
  11. Underworld / M.E. 45:23
  12. Brian Eno / The Roil, The Choke 52:13
  13. Dead TV Society & Zwart Licht Kommando / Gamma Waves 56:47

This came together after spending time with XY0815's This Tool Has No Options and Micronaut's electronics series (Resistor, Capacitor, Transformer). XY0815's album is currently free at Yuyay Records, and Micronaut's three electronics EPs are inexpensive (a couple of bucks each). All of them are really good and definitely worth picking up.

This mix doesn't quite work - Arcadian is played too loud, M.E. doesn't sit right, etc. But that's OK. The tracks are good. Should've closed with Headspin, though.
